 1-2                          SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 421
 1-3           WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas is pleased to
 1-4     designate March 13, 2001, as Corsicana/Navarro County Day at
 1-5     the State Capitol; and
 1-6           WHEREAS, Situated in North Central Texas, Navarro County is
 1-7     comprised of more than 1,000 square miles of prairie and woodland
 1-8     and is blessed with an abundance of natural resources; the county,
 1-9     which was once predominated by the Kickapoo and Comanche tribes,
1-10     was established in 1846 and named for the Republic of Texas
1-11     leader, Jose Antonio Navarro; and
1-12           WHEREAS, Founded in the mid-1800s, Corsicana, the county
1-13     seat of Navarro, took its name from the Mediterranean island
1-14     of Corsica, the birthplace of Jose Antonio Navarro; and
1-15           WHEREAS, Soon after its founding, the county became an
1-16     agricultural center, specializing in the growth of cotton,
1-17     tobacco, and produce crops; in 1894, citizens struck Texas
1-18     crude, which quickly became the area's primary export; and
1-19           WHEREAS, Residents of Navarro County are proud of their
1-20     region's rich history and diverse cultural heritage, celebrated
1-21     in the town's Pioneer Village, its acclaimed Pearce Collection
 2-1     of Civil War Documents, its 44,000-piece Native American art
 2-2     collection, and its impressive Arts, Science and Technology
 2-3     Center; and
 2-4           WHEREAS, Navarro County offers its inhabitants a wealth of
 2-5     natural beauty in which to delight; the region is widely known
 2-6     as a sportsman's paradise, and its Richland Chambers Lake and
 2-7     Navarro Mills Lake attract fishing and boating enthusiasts; and
 2-8           WHEREAS, Residents of Navarro County and Corsicana also
 2-9     delight in their area's many gastronomic delights; Russell Stover
2-10     Candies located an 800-person manufacturing facility in the area,
2-11     an enterprise welcomed by area sweet tooths; the county's other
2-12     culinary claim to fame is the Corsicana fruitcake; a product
2-13     of the Collin Street Bakery, it is the only fruitcake to have
2-14     been honored with the Culinary Merit Award by the Gourmet Society
2-15     of New York; and
2-16           WHEREAS, A thriving local economy enriches citizens of
2-17     Corsicana and Navarro County; in particular, Corsicana is a
2-18     leading energy producer, a major hub for retail and wholesale
2-19     trade for agricultural products, and a center for health care
2-20     services; and
2-21           WHEREAS, Citizens of Corsicana and Navarro County are
2-22     a spirited, industrious, and resilient people who possess an
2-23     abundance of civic pride; it is indeed a pleasure and a privilege
2-24     for the Texas Senate to honor the citizens of Navarro County and
 3-1     Corsicana when they visit the Capitol to celebrate the many
 3-2     unique and valuable contributions that their city and county
 3-3     have made to Texas; now, therefore, be it
 3-4           RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas,
 3-5     77th Legislature, hereby recognize March 13, 2001, as
 3-6     Corsicana/Navarro County Day at the Capitol and extend best
 3-7     wishes to citizens of this great city and county for a most
 3-8     joyous event; and, be it further
 3-9           RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared in
3-10     honor of Coriscana and Navarro County as a memento of this
3-11     special day.
