 1-2                          SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 422
 1-3           WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas is pleased to
 1-4     recognize Peggy and Charles S. Pearce, Jr., of Corsicana for
 1-5     their extreme generosity in donating the Pearce Civil War
 1-6     Collection to Navarro College; and
 1-7           WHEREAS, Mr. and Mrs. Pearce's gift of more than 3,000
 1-8     significant letters, signatures, diaries, journals, photographs,
 1-9     and other memorabilia from the Civil War era is indeed a prize
1-10     that will be cherished by students and faculty members at Navarro
1-11     College and by historians; and
1-12           WHEREAS, It was 1991 when Charles purchased as a gift
1-13     for Peggy the collection's first item, a letter written by
1-14     Joshua Lawrence Chamberlain to his wife, Fanny, from the
1-15     battlefield at Antietam; and
1-16           WHEREAS, Over 10 years, Mr. and Mrs. Pearce continued to
1-17     nurture their enthusiasm for this pivotal period in United States
1-18     history, amassing scores of precious Civil War artifacts; the
1-19     collection stands today widely respected for the depth and
1-20     balance of its coverage and for its extraordinary content; and
1-21           WHEREAS, The Pearce Civil War Collection at Navarro College
1-22     features letters by numerous Civil War era personages, including
1-23     Abraham Lincoln, Ulysses S. Grant, and Robert E. Lee; additionally,
 2-1     documents written by common soldiers reveal the realities of
 2-2     combat and the suffering of the men and women of the period; and
 2-3           WHEREAS, Born to families in New York and Wisconsin
 2-4     respectively, Peggy and Charles are both graduates of Cornell
 2-5     University; they moved to Texas in the 1950s to reside in Kerens
 2-6     on a ranch that had been in Charles's family for three generations;
 2-7     and
 2-8           WHEREAS, The Pearce Civil War Collection is a precious
 2-9     resource that Navarro College will proudly share with students
2-10     and scholars throughout the nation and world; through this gift,
2-11     Peggy and Charles Pearce have manifested the great love and respect
2-12     they harbor for their adopted state, and Texas and Navarro College
2-13     are deeply honored by the generosity of this distinguished couple;
2-14     now, therefore, be it
2-15           RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas,
2-16     77th Legislature, hereby extend its utmost gratitude to Peggy
2-17     and Charles S. Pearce, Jr., for their generous contribution to
2-18     Navarro College; and, be it further
2-19           RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for
2-20     Mr. and Mrs. Pearce as an expression of the deep esteem and
2-21     appreciation of the Texas Senate.
