 1-2                          SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 423
 1-3           WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas is pleased to
 1-4     recognize Sara Stevens McKnight for a lifetime of exemplary
 1-5     volunteer work and community support; and
 1-6           WHEREAS, Born February 15, 1925, in El Paso, Sara is the
 1-7     daughter of Dr. Branwell Fanning Stevens and Elise Walters Stevens;
 1-8     she graduated from El Paso High School and received her bachelor
 1-9     of science degree in biology from Hollins University; and
1-10           WHEREAS, Sara's commitment to community service began early
1-11     in life; while in college she was a member of the student Young
1-12     Women's Christian Association, and she distinguished herself as a
1-13     leader serving as president of her junior class and vice
1-14     president of the student body; and
1-15           WHEREAS, Later in life she began her work with the Junior
1-16     League of El Paso, eventually serving that body as chairman of
1-17     the first Homemaker Service, a joint effort with the Child
1-18     Welfare Association and the El Paso public schools; and
1-19           WHEREAS, During her life Sara has lived in Houston,
1-20     Abilene, and Washington, D.C.; while away from El Paso, she
1-21     always continued her community work with the same enthusiasm
 2-1     she exhibited in her hometown; and
 2-2           WHEREAS, Sara McKnight has given her unfailing support to
 2-3     numerous organizations, including the El Paso Historical Society,
 2-4     Saint Francis on the Hill Episcopal Church, the El Paso Public
 2-5     Library, United Way, and Pro-Musica; and
 2-6           WHEREAS, Sara McKnight will be honored for her enduring
 2-7     commitment to community service by the Young Women's Christian
 2-8     Association, which will name its Transitional Living Center in
 2-9     her honor; and
2-10           WHEREAS, Sara has served the Young Women's Christian
2-11     Association in many capacities, acting as the organization's
2-12     president, as chairman of the Young Women's Christian Foundation,
2-13     as chairman of the Endowment Committee, and as a member of the
2-14     World Service Council of the Young Women's Christian Association;
2-15     and
2-16           WHEREAS, An exemplary and distinguished lady, Sara has
2-17     spent her time working for the betterment of others, and the
2-18     State of Texas is indeed fortunate to count her among its
2-19     citizens; she is truly worthy of legislative recognition and
2-20     praise; now, therefore, be it
2-21           RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas,
2-22     77th Legislature, hereby congratulate Sara Stevens McKnight
2-23     on having the Young Women's Christian Association Transitional
 3-1     Living Center named in her honor and extend a sincere thank you
 3-2     to her for a lifetime of civic activism; and, be it further
 3-3           RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared
 3-4     for Sara McKnight as an expression of great esteem from the
 3-5     Texas Senate.
