 1-2                          SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 430
 1-3           WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas is pleased
 1-4     to recognize the members of the Dr. Emmett J. Conrad Student
 1-5     Advisory Committee on the occasion of their visit to the
 1-6     State Capitol on Tuesday, March 13, 2001; and
 1-7           WHEREAS, Sponsored by Senator Royce West, the Student
 1-8     Advisory Committee includes young people from the Dallas,
 1-9     Duncanville, Grand Prairie, Lancaster, DeSoto, and Wilmer-Hutchins
1-10     school districts; the committee is comprised of junior high school
1-11     and high school students who are leaders of student council and
1-12     student class governments; and
1-13           WHEREAS, The Student Advisory Committee was established in
1-14     the spring of 1996 for the purpose of helping students to build
1-15     leadership skills and to meet with leaders across the state; it
1-16     was also established with the goal of helping students discover
1-17     how they can participate in community volunteerism and the means
1-18     through which they can voice their perspective on legislative
1-19     issues; and
1-20           WHEREAS, Over the last five years, the Student Advisory
1-21     Committee has accomplished a great deal in the Dallas community;
1-22     the students have visited nursing homes throughout the district
 2-1     and have worked hard on behalf of the Children's Hope Foundation,
 2-2     collecting more than 500 clothing items for homeless children; and
 2-3           WHEREAS, They have participated in toy, blanket, and
 2-4     voters' registration drives and have provided testimony at the
 2-5     Senate Interim Committee on Juvenile Justice and Gangs hearing
 2-6     in Dallas; and
 2-7           WHEREAS, The students toured the Dallas Life Foundation, a
 2-8     homeless shelter, and the Family Gateway, a shelter that provides
 2-9     emergency and transitional housing for homeless families; they
2-10     have volunteered at the Bluitt-Flowers Halloween Carnival, have
2-11     held annual receptions for elected officials, and have donated more
2-12     than 200 blankets and pillows to Promise House; and
2-13           WHEREAS, The Student Advisory Committee is a valuable asset
2-14     to District 23, and the work of its members is encouraging and
2-15     fostering volunteerism in the community and setting exemplary
2-16     standards for people of all ages to follow; now, therefore, be it
2-17           RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas,
2-18     77th Legislature, hereby commend the members of the
2-19     Dr. Emmett J. Conrad Student Advisory Committee on their
2-20     dedication and their many accomplishments and extend to them
2-21     best wishes for the future; and, be it further
2-22           RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for
2-23     the committee as an expression of esteem from the Texas Senate.
