1-1 1 1-2 SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 437 1-3 WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas takes pride in 1-4 recognizing Jack Saint Clair Kilby, the former director of 1-5 engineering and technology at Texas Instruments and the famed 1-6 inventor of the integrated circuit, on his recent selection for 1-7 this year's Nobel Prize for Physics; and 1-8 WHEREAS, Jack Kilby began his meteoric career in 1947 with 1-9 his employment at Centralab Division of Globe Union, Incorporated, 1-10 in Milwaukee; he joined Texas Instruments in Dallas in 1958, and 1-11 during that summer, he conceived and built the first electronic 1-12 circuit in which all of the components were fabricated in a single 1-13 piece of semiconductor material half the size of a paper clip; his 1-14 invention of the monolithic integrated circuit--the microchip--made 1-15 history with its successful laboratory demonstration on 1-16 September 12, 1958; and 1-17 WHEREAS, Jack Kilby's invention of the microchip laid the 1-18 conceptual and technical foundation for the entire field of modern 1-19 microelectronics and made possible the advanced computers and 1-20 networks that form today's information age; and 1-21 WHEREAS, In addition, Mr. Kilby went on to pioneer military, 1-22 industrial, and commercial applications of microchip technology 1-23 and later co-invented the hand-held calculator and the thermal 2-1 printer for use in portable data terminals; he now holds over 60 2-2 United States patents; and 2-3 WHEREAS, Mr. Kilby is the recipient of two of the nation's 2-4 most prestigious honors in science and engineering; he received 2-5 the National Medal of Science in 1970 and was inducted into the 2-6 National Inventors Hall of Fame in 1982, taking his place along 2-7 with such innovative giants as Henry Ford, Thomas Edison, and the 2-8 Wright Brothers; and 2-9 WHEREAS, A man of great vision who has distinguished himself 2-10 through his professional accomplishments, Jack Kilby is one of the 2-11 elite group of people around the world who can truly be credited 2-12 with changing history and for helping to establish the basis of 2-13 all modern technology; now, therefore, be it 2-14 RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 2-15 77th Legislature, hereby commend Jack Saint Clair Kilby on 2-16 his outstanding achievements and extend congratulations to him 2-17 on earning the Nobel Prize for Physics; and, be it further 2-18 RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for 2-19 Jack Kilby as an expression of esteem from the Texas Senate. 2-20 Shapiro 2-21 ______________________________________ 2-22 President of the Senate 2-23 I hereby certify that the above 2-24 Resolution was adopted by the Senate 2-25 on March 12, 2001. 2-26 ______________________________________ 2-27 Secretary of the Senate 2-28 ______________________________________ 2-29 Member, Texas Senate
