 1-4                                     of
 1-5                             C. H. Matthies Jr.
 1-6           WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas joins the citizens
 1-7     of Seguin in mourning the loss of C. H. "Pokey" Matthies Jr., who
 1-8     died January 2, 2000, at the age of 67; and
 1-9           WHEREAS, Born February 12, 1932, to the late
1-10     C. H. Matthies Sr. and Mary Fleming Matthies, Pokey Matthies
1-11     was a native of Seguin and a member of a pioneering Seguin family;
1-12     he grew up to become an exemplary and distinguished gentleman and
1-13     a highly respected leader in the Seguin community; and
1-14           WHEREAS, At the time of his death, he was the Seguin mayor
1-15     pro tempore and was serving his first full term as a member of
1-16     the Seguin City Council; he was first elected to the position of
1-17     District 7 councilman in 1996; and
1-18           WHEREAS, Mr. Matthies was a member of the Seguin Rotary
1-19     Club, the Seguin Elks Lodge, and the American Legion 245; he was
1-20     president-elect of the Texas Elks State Association and chairman
1-21     of the San Geronimo Cemetery Association; and
1-22           WHEREAS, Mr. Matthies was a beloved public servant who was
 2-1     dedicated to his work on behalf of Seguin and its citizens; he was
 2-2     also a devout Christian and a member of the First United Methodist
 2-3     Church; and
 2-4           WHEREAS, Pokey Matthies lived his life to the fullest and
 2-5     was a devoted husband, father and grandfather, and he leaves
 2-6     behind memories that will be treasured forever by his family and
 2-7     many friends; now, therefore, be it
 2-8           RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas,
 2-9     77th Legislature, hereby extend sincere condolences to
2-10     the bereaved family of C. H. Matthies Jr.:  his wife,
2-11     Betty Ann Matthies; his sons, C. Henry Matthies III and
2-12     Wesley Herrmann Matthies; his daughter, Elizabeth Matthies Kappel;
2-13     his mother, Mary Fleming Matthies; his sisters, Joe Adele Schmidt
2-14     and Ann Miller; his brothers, C. F. "Skippy" Matthies and
2-15     Zan Matthies; and his two granddaughters; and, be it further
2-16           RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for the
2-17     members of his family as an expression of deepest sympathy from
2-18     the Texas Senate, and that when the Senate adjourns this day, it
2-19     do so in memory of C. H. Matthies Jr.
