1-1 1 1-2 SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 440 1-3 WHEREAS, The Texas Senate is proud to recognize 1-4 Kaufman County and to join its citizens in honoring their 1-5 important contributions to the State of Texas on Kaufman County 1-6 Day, which is being celebrated on March 19, 2001; and 1-7 WHEREAS, The petition to organize the county was drawn 1-8 by John H. Reagan in 1848, and the new county was named for 1-9 David Spangler Kaufman, a member of the Texas and United States 1-10 congresses; and 1-11 WHEREAS, For the last 153 years, the citizens of the area 1-12 have been the personification of rugged individualism and the 1-13 spirit of independence that built the State of Texas; and 1-14 WHEREAS, The fertile land grows abundant crops and occupies 1-15 an area of 786.1 square miles; lying partly in the upper Blackland 1-16 prairie and partly in the southeastern post oak belt of the 1-17 East Texas timber country, the area is drained by the Trinity River 1-18 and Cedar Creek; and 1-19 WHEREAS, Kaufman County was first settled by 1-20 Dr. William P. King in late 1840 when he headed a group of 1-21 40 people from Holly Springs, Mississippi, who came to Texas 2-1 to begin a new life with land scrip that Dr. King had acquired; 2-2 the scrip was used to finance the Texas Revolution; and 2-3 WHEREAS, The families built a fort near the three forks 2-4 of the Trinity River and named the fort in the doctor's honor; 2-5 the rapidly growing territory was surveyed because other settlers 2-6 and their families were drawn to the area, and homes were needed 2-7 for them; and 2-8 WHEREAS, After the election of 1851, the community was 2-9 renamed Kaufman, and the county seat was located at Kingsborough; 2-10 the first courthouse was a remodeled blacksmith shop, but a new 2-11 courthouse was built in 1885 which stood for over 70 years; in 2-12 1955, a new courthouse was built reflecting the growth and 2-13 diversity of the economy; and 2-14 WHEREAS, The Porter Farm near Terrell is the historic 2-15 site of the origin of the United States-Texas Agricultural 2-16 Extension Program, and Kaufman County receives most of its 2-17 agricultural income from cattle and horses; hay, nursery plants, 2-18 peaches, cotton, corn, and timber bring in additional income; and 2-19 WHEREAS, Terrell, the county's manufacturing center, 2-20 is graced with many historic homes, and it is the location 2-21 of Trinity Valley Community College and Southwestern Christian 2-22 College; and 2-23 WHEREAS, A well-known antique center, the town of Forney, 3-1 draws many antique buffs, and outdoor enthusiasts find recreation 3-2 at Cedar Creek or at Ray Hubbard lakes; and 3-3 WHEREAS, Since it is close to Dallas, Kaufman County 3-4 residents enjoy numerous of the conveniences of one of Texas' 3-5 major cities, while still benefitting from the family-oriented 3-6 communities which make the county an advantageous place to live; 3-7 now, therefore, be it 3-8 RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 3-9 77th Legislature, hereby declare March 19, 2001, as Kaufman County 3-10 Day at the State Capitol and join Kaufman County residents as they 3-11 celebrate their county's greatness; and, be it further 3-12 RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for 3-13 Kaufman County as a memento of this special day. 3-14 Cain 3-15 Armbrister Harris Shapiro 3-16 Barrientos Haywood Shapleigh 3-17 Bernsen Jackson Sibley 3-18 Bivins Lindsay Staples 3-19 Brown Lucio Truan 3-20 Carona Madla Van de Putte 3-21 Duncan Moncrief Wentworth 3-22 Ellis Nelson West 3-23 Fraser Ogden Whitmire 3-24 Gallegos Zaffirini 3-25 Ratliff, President of the Senate 3-26 ______________________________________ 3-27 President of the Senate 3-28 I hereby certify that the above 3-29 Resolution was adopted by the Senate 3-30 on March 19, 2001. 3-31 ______________________________________ 3-32 Secretary of the Senate 4-1 ______________________________________ 4-2 Member, Texas Senate
