 1-4                                     of
 1-5                           Charles Nelson Prothro
 1-6           WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas joins the citizens
 1-7     of Wichita Falls in mourning the loss of Charles Nelson Prothro,
 1-8     who died Monday, March 5, 2001, at the age of 83; and
 1-9           WHEREAS, Born January 14, 1918, in Wichita Falls,
1-10     Charles Prothro graduated from The University of Texas at Austin
1-11     in 1939 and served in the Coast Guard during World War II; he
1-12     married Elizabeth Perkins and formed a partnership in business
1-13     with his father-in-law, J. J. Perkins; they established the
1-14     Perkins-Prothro Company and later the Perkins-Timberlake Company;
1-15     and
1-16           WHEREAS, Charles Prothro was a highly successful oilman,
1-17     rancher, and businessman and was well known as a leading citizen
1-18     and philanthropist; he and his wife and his company contributed
1-19     generously to a number of charitable causes and institutions;
1-20     Mr. Prothro donated to churches, civic organizations, and state
1-21     colleges and universities; and
 2-1           WHEREAS, Mr. and Mrs. Prothro and their foundation
 2-2     contributed more than $26 million to Southern Methodist University,
 2-3     much of which was designated for the Perkins School of Theology;
 2-4     in 1997, the Prothro-Perkins Foundation gave $1.25 million to the
 2-5     Harry Ransom Humanities Research Center at The University of Texas
 2-6     at Austin, where over the years, Mr. Prothro's gifts included a
 2-7     photography endowment and donations to a photography gallery and
 2-8     a theater; and
 2-9           WHEREAS, An exemplary and distinguished gentleman,
2-10     Charles Prothro was respected for his many accomplishments,
2-11     his humanitarian endeavors, and his leadership in the community;
2-12     and
2-13           WHEREAS, He served on the board of governors of Southern
2-14     Methodist University from 1958 to 1981 and was on the board
2-15     of trustees at Southwestern University in Georgetown, Texas,
2-16     for 26 years; he served on the board of Sweet Briar College
2-17     for 18 years; and
2-18           WHEREAS, A man of integrity, strength, and generosity,
2-19     he gave unselfishly of his time and energy to others, and his
2-20     wisdom, warmth, and sense of humor will not be forgotten by
2-21     those who knew him; and
2-22           WHEREAS, Charles Prothro lived his life to the fullest and
2-23     was a devoted husband, father, and grandfather, and he leaves
2-24     behind memories that will be treasured forever by his family and
 3-1     many friends; now, therefore, be it
 3-2           RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas,
 3-3     77th Legislature, hereby extend sincere condolences to
 3-4     the bereaved family of Charles Nelson Prothro:  his wife,
 3-5     Elizabeth Perkins Prothro; his sons, Joe and Mark Prothro;
 3-6     his daughter, Kay Prothro Yeager; and his 10 grandchildren
 3-7     and nine great-grandchildren; and, be it further
 3-8           RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for
 3-9     the members of his family as an expression of deepest sympathy
3-10     from the Texas Senate, and that when the Senate adjourns this
3-11     day, it do so in memory of Charles Nelson Prothro.
