 1-2                          SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 442
 1-3           WHEREAS, On March 13, 2001, many proud residents of
 1-4     Gainesville will gather in Austin to celebrate Gainesville
 1-5     Appreciation Day at the State Capitol; and
 1-6           WHEREAS, Established in 1850 and named for Texas patriot
 1-7     Edmund Pendleton Gaines, the city enjoys a long and distinguished
 1-8     history; after the Civil War, massive cattle drives, oil, and
 1-9     cotton helped to spur growth and bring prosperity to the area, and
1-10     Gainesville now has a multifaceted economy that revolves around
1-11     agribusiness, aircraft and steel fabrication plants, manufacturing,
1-12     and tourism; and
1-13           WHEREAS, This charming city serves as the county seat of
1-14     Cooke County and has many noteworthy attractions, including the
1-15     25-acre Frank Buck Zoo, which charges no admission and annually
1-16     draws more than 110,000 people; moreover, the zoo holds the
1-17     distinction of being one of the oldest in our state and is named
1-18     for Gainesville native Frank Buck, Jr., who is considered the
1-19     father of America's modern zoos; and
1-20           WHEREAS, Gainesville also features a large historic
1-21     district that is replete with brick-paved streets and
1-22     Victorian-style homes dating to the 19th century; in addition,
1-23     the city is home to the Kinne's Jewelers Museum, Morton Museum
 2-1     of Cooke County, Texas Travel Information Center, and Amtrak's
 2-2     Heartland Flyer, as well as respected institutions of higher
 2-3     learning such as Cooke County Junior College and North Central
 2-4     Texas College; and
 2-5           WHEREAS, Located 67 miles north of Dallas, Gainesville
 2-6     offers its residents a splendid combination of small-town virtues
 2-7     and access to big-city life, and the city's proximity to several
 2-8     bodies of water and recreation facilities makes it a prime
 2-9     destination for outdoor and water enthusiasts; and
2-10           WHEREAS, With its innate charm, unspoiled beauty, and
2-11     rich heritage and culture, Gainesville remains one of the
2-12     Lone Star State's great assets; it truly is an outstanding place
2-13     in which to live, work, and raise a family, and it is most
2-14     appropriate to pay tribute to the city and its residents at this
2-15     time; now, therefore, be it
2-16           RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas,
2-17     77th Texas Legislature, hereby recognize March 13, 2001, as
2-18     Gainesville Appreciation Day at the State Capitol and extend
2-19     its citizens sincere best wishes for success and happiness in
2-20     their future endeavors.
