 1-4                                     of
 1-5                        The Honorable Wayne Connally
 1-6           WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas joins
 1-7     citizens across the state in mourning the loss of former
 1-8     Texas Senator Wayne Connally, an estimable public servant,
 1-9     who died December 20, 2000; and
1-10           WHEREAS, A member of a famous political family,
1-11     Wayne Connally was born March 19, 1923, in Floresville,
1-12     Wilson County; and
1-13           WHEREAS, Educated in public schools in Floresville and
1-14     San Antonio, Wayne Connally attended The University of Texas
1-15     at Austin before enlisting in the United States Army Air Corps
1-16     during World War II; following his time in the military, he
1-17     worked as a rancher in his native region; and
1-18           WHEREAS, Wayne Connally viewed his state service as a
1-19     tenet of good citizenship; he was elected to the Texas House
1-20     of Representatives in 1964, and won his seat in the Texas Senate
1-21     two years later, representing Senate District 21 from the
1-22     59th through the 62nd Texas Legislatures; he was honored by his
 2-1     peers as "Governor for a Day" on October 7, 1971; and
 2-2           WHEREAS, Senator Connally's overriding goal was to uphold
 2-3     Texans' faith in the integrity and responsibility of their state
 2-4     government; and
 2-5           WHEREAS, His legacy includes working with his brother, the
 2-6     late Governor John Connally, in creating the first upper-level
 2-7     higher education institution in Laredo in 1970, the first step
 2-8     toward establishing Texas A&M International University in 1993; and
 2-9           WHEREAS, A tall, imposing figure who spent his life working
2-10     as a rancher and a public leader, Wayne Connally will be remembered
2-11     as the quintessential Texan; he leaves the people of his native
2-12     state a legacy of faithful service to the home he so loved, Texas;
2-13     now, therefore, be it
2-14           RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas,
2-15     77th Legislature, hereby extend sincere condolences to the family
2-16     of Wayne Connally:  his children, Wyatt, Pamela, and Wesley; and
2-17     his four grandchildren; and, be it further
2-18           RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for his
2-19     family as an expression of deepest sympathy from the Texas Senate
2-20     and that when the Senate adjourns this day, it do so in memory of
2-21     its former member Wayne Connally.
