1-1 1 1-2 SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 484 1-3 In Memory 1-4 of 1-5 Dr. James E. McClellan, Jr. 1-6 WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas joins 1-7 the citizens of Corpus Christi in mourning the loss of 1-8 Dr. James E. McClellan, Jr., who died on March 6, 2001, at 1-9 the age of 78; and 1-10 WHEREAS, A native of Temple, Texas, he attended Rice 1-11 University from 1941 to 1943 when his studies were interrupted 1-12 so he could serve his country honorably in the United States Navy 1-13 during World War II with the rank of ensign; and 1-14 WHEREAS, Dr. McClellan trained as a pilot at Naval 1-15 Air Station Corpus Christi and decided that he would someday 1-16 return to the city to live; in 1945, during his Navy service, 1-17 Dr. McClellan used his fluency in Spanish as a liaison officer 1-18 in Cuba at Guantanamo Bay; and 1-19 WHEREAS, In 1949 he once again resumed his studies and 1-20 earned a bachelor of science degree from The University of Texas; 1-21 from 1950 to 1955 he worked diligently to earn master's and 1-22 doctoral degrees at the University of Illinois, Champaign-Urbana; 1-23 and 2-1 WHEREAS, In 1953 Dr. McClellan began his teaching career 2-2 at Florida State University in Tallahassee, where he taught for 2-3 one year; for the next 34 years, Dr. McClellan went on to be a 2-4 professor at the following colleges and universities: Teachers 2-5 College, Columbia University, Temple University, and the State 2-6 University of New York at Albany; during this time he also taught 2-7 courses at such distinguished universities as Johns Hopkins, 2-8 Harvard, Cornell, and Syracuse; he served as a consultant to 2-9 the United States Office of Economic Opportunity, the State of 2-10 New Jersey Department of Education, and the Educational Policy 2-11 Research Center at Syracuse University; and 2-12 WHEREAS, His knowledge and experience allowed him to author 2-13 three books on educational philosophy as well as author hundreds 2-14 of scholarly articles, and he was a founding member of the national 2-15 Philosophy of Education Society; and 2-16 WHEREAS, A former Guggenheim Fellow and Professor Emeritus 2-17 of Philosophy of Education at the State University of New York at 2-18 Albany, Dr. McClellan first served as a Visiting Professor of 2-19 Philosophy of Education at Texas A&M University-Corpus Christi 2-20 in 1987; and 2-21 WHEREAS, Dr. McClellan helped in establishing the first 2-22 doctoral program at Texas A&M-Corpus Christi in Educational 2-23 Leadership, and, in addition to this great achievement, he 2-24 also helped establish a faculty exchange program between 2-25 Texas A&M University-Corpus Christi and Moscow State University 2-26 in Russia; to add to his accomplishments, Dr. McClellan continued 3-1 his contributions to Texas A&M-Corpus Christi and helped establish 3-2 a university policy requiring all undergraduate students to take 3-3 a course in professional ethics; and 3-4 WHEREAS, Dr. McClellan taught the first philosophy courses 3-5 offered by the university in the College of Education and 3-6 College of Arts and Humanities; and 3-7 WHEREAS, Dr. McClellan was praised for his generosity to his 3-8 family, friends, and colleagues, and he had a passionate approach 3-9 to all things he loved from his enjoyment in debating philosophical 3-10 theories to his favorite pastime of playing croquet; and 3-11 WHEREAS, Throughout his lengthy career, Dr. McClellan was 3-12 loyally supported by his lovely wife and colleague of 28 years, 3-13 Dorothy Spektorov McClellan; he is also survived by four sons, 3-14 four grandchildren, and one sister; and 3-15 WHEREAS, Dr. McClellan leaves a legacy of compassion and 3-16 commitment that will remain cherished by all who shared his life; 3-17 he will be greatly missed; now, therefore, be it 3-18 RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 3-19 77th Legislature, hereby extend sincere condolences to the 3-20 members of his family: his wife, Dorothy; his children, James, 3-21 John, Murray, and Bruce; his four grandchildren; and his sister, 3-22 Ann; and, be it further 3-23 RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for 3-24 the family of Dr. James E. McClellan, Jr., as an expression of 3-25 deepest sympathy from the Texas Senate, and that when the Senate 3-26 adjourns this day, it do so in memory of Dr. James E.
