 1-5                           Dr. Thomas F. Burks II
 1-6           WHEREAS, The recent passing of Dr. Thomas F. Burks II,
 1-7     on March 2, 2001, at the age of 62, has brought a great loss to the
 1-8     family and many friends of this highly esteemed and deeply loved
 1-9     Houston educator; and
1-10           WHEREAS, Dr. Burks received his bachelor of science and master
1-11     of science degrees at The University of Texas at Austin; he earned
1-12     he earned his doctorate from the University of Iowa College of
1-13     Medicine; and
1-14           WHEREAS, After receiving his postdoctoral training, Dr. Burks
1-15     became assistant professor of pharmacology at the University of
1-16     New Mexico School of Medicine, where he was appointed associate
1-17     professor in 1971; and
1-18           WHEREAS, Because of his expertise in his field, he received
1-19     numerous grants from the National Institutes of Health relating to
1-20     his studies in pharmacology; and
 2-1           WHEREAS, Dr. Burks was the executive vice president for
 2-2     research and academic affairs at The University of Texas Health
 2-3     Science Center in Houston, and he was also a professor of
 2-4     pharmacology at the university's medical school; and 
 2-5           WHEREAS, Recipient of the university's first John Freeman
 2-6     Award for Outstanding Teaching, Thomas Burks served as a member of
 2-7     the faculty of the Graduate School of Biomedical Sciences; and
 2-8           WHEREAS, Widely known for his administrative talents,
 2-9     Dr. Burks was leading preparations for the 14th World Congress of
2-10     Pharmacology in San Francisco in July, 2002; the prestigious
2-11     meeting is held only every four years, and Dr. Burks was selected
2-12     president of the congress by the host organization, the American
2-13     Society for Pharmacology and Experimental Therapeutics; and
2-14           WHEREAS, Dr. Burks was a man of great generosity and
2-15     passion, and although his warmth and wisdom are gone from us now,
2-16     his remarkable spirit will live in the hearts of the many people
2-17     whose lives he touched during his time on this earth; now,
2-18     therefore, be it
2-19           RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas,
2-20     77th Legislature, hereby pay tribute to the life of Thomas F. Burks
2-21     and extend sincere condolences to the members of his family:  his
2-22     wife, Dorothy Travis Burks; his daughter, Kathleen Louise Burks;
2-23     his son, Thomas Franklin Burks III; his parents, Jerry Y. and
2-24     Goldie M. Riley Burks; and his brothers, Dr. Jerry Y. Burks, Jr.,
 3-1     and Michael R. Burks; and, be it further
 3-2           RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for his
 3-3     family as an expression of deepest sympathy from the Texas Senate,
 3-4     and that when the Senate adjourns this day, it do so in memory of
 3-5     Dr. Thomas F. Burks.
