 1-2                          SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 494
 1-3           WHEREAS, On this day, one of the state's fine citizens
 1-4     is being honored for her significant contributions to her
 1-5     community, and it is a privilege to recognize March 19, 2001,
 1-6     as Doris Hamblen Day at the State Capitol; and
 1-7           WHEREAS, A native of Nacogdoches, this remarkable woman
 1-8     devotes her energies to improving the lives of those around her,
 1-9     be it her family, her neighbors, or a weary traveler; and
1-10           WHEREAS, She worked for Southwestern Bell before she met
1-11     and married J. E. Hamblen in 1954 and moved to Forney; their
1-12     family grew to include two children, Cheree and Lisa, and three
1-13     beloved grandchildren, Lucia, Landon, and Lena; and
1-14           WHEREAS, Mrs. Hamblen has been an active member of the
1-15     First Baptist Church of Forney for more than four decades, where
1-16     she taught Sunday school for many years; currently on the building
1-17     committee, she also works at the home where foreign missionaries
1-18     stay while they are on furlough; and
1-19           WHEREAS, An avid gardener, she founded the Forney
1-20     Beautification committee, coordinates the Christmas decorations
1-21     for the City of Forney each year, and is a member of the garden
1-22     club; and one of the town's parks, which she helped to establish,
 2-1     now bears her name; and
 2-2           WHEREAS, The recipient of the Helping Hand Award by the
 2-3     Forney Chamber of Commerce and an active supporter of the local
 2-4     food pantry, Mrs. Hamblen also is funding a scholarship for
 2-5     graduates of Forney High School in memory of her late husband; and
 2-6           WHEREAS, She is a gracious host who has opened her home
 2-7     to friends of friends, visiting pastors, and local organizations,
 2-8     and it is most appropriate to take this opportunity to honor this
 2-9     kindhearted woman of great integrity and humanity; now, therefore,
2-10     be it
2-11           RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas,
2-12     77th Legislature, hereby recognize March 19, 2001, as Doris Hamblen
2-13     Day at the State Capitol and extend to Mrs. Hamblen sincere best
2-14     wishes for the future; and, be it further
2-15           RESOLVED, That an official copy of this Resolution be
2-16     prepared for Mrs. Hamblen as an expression of high regard from
2-17     the Texas Senate.
