1-1 1 1-2 SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 505 1-3 WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas is pleased to 1-4 recognize Vernor Kennedy, who retired on December 30, 2000, from 1-5 his business as a barber after 61 years of outstanding service; and 1-6 WHEREAS, A native of Tyler, Texas, Vernor Kennedy graduated 1-7 from Tyler Barber College and was employed for a while by 1-8 H. M. Morgan Barber Shop; he moved to Houston in 1939 and joined 1-9 his two cousins at the Square Deal Barber Shop in the Fifth Ward, 1-10 where he worked until joining the United States Army in October of 1-11 1941; and 1-12 WHEREAS, In November of 1945, Vernor moved to Dallas, Texas, 1-13 where he was employed at the Goodwill Barber Shop for one year, and 1-14 on January 20, 1947, he opened his own Square Deal Barber Shop in 1-15 South Dallas on Myrtle Street; and 1-16 WHEREAS, He operated the shop at that location for 23 years 1-17 until the city purchased his property, causing him to relocate 1-18 to Martin Luther King Boulevard; he operated his second shop for 1-19 13 years until his retirement in December of 2000; and 1-20 WHEREAS, As owner of the Square Deal Barber Shop, Mr. Kennedy 1-21 operated a first-class business, providing professional service to 1-22 his clients, as well as a friendly and relaxed atmosphere; and 1-23 WHEREAS, Vernor Kennedy's many contributions to the barber 2-1 profession, both local and statewide, included serving as treasurer 2-2 of the Barber's Dallas Chapter of T.A.O.T.A., as vice president of 2-3 the organization's state chapter, and as a member of its board of 2-4 directors; and 2-5 WHEREAS, Vernor Kennedy is respected for his many 2-6 accomplishments and his leadership in his profession and in the 2-7 community; he and his wife, Ollie V. Kennedy, are members of 2-8 Saint John Missionary Baptist Church, where Mr. Kennedy serves 2-9 on the Board of Deacons and formerly sang with the choir; and 2-10 WHEREAS, An exemplary gentleman, Vernor Kennedy distinguished 2-11 himself in his profession and continues to be a source of strength 2-12 and support to his family, friends, and community; now, therefore, 2-13 be it 2-14 RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 2-15 77th Legislature, hereby commend Vernor Kennedy on his successful 2-16 career as a barber for 61 years and his contributions to his 2-17 community and state and extend to him best wishes for the 2-18 retirement years ahead; and, be it further 2-19 RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for him 2-20 as an expression of esteem from the Texas Senate. 2-21 West 2-22 ______________________________________ 2-23 President of the Senate 2-24 I hereby certify that the above 2-25 Resolution was adopted by the Senate 2-26 on March 19, 2001. 2-27 ______________________________________ 2-28 Secretary of the Senate 2-29 ______________________________________ 2-30 Member, Texas Senate
