1-1 ****** NEED TWO-PAGE HEADER ****** 1-2 SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 508 1-3 WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas is proud to 1-4 commend Perry Giles for his superb work in establishing a 1-5 veterans memorial in Ellis County; and 1-6 WHEREAS, A native Texan, Perry was born in 1955, in 1-7 Waxahachie; he graduated from Waxahachie High School and then 1-8 continued his education at The University of Texas; and 1-9 WHEREAS, Perry has long been active in the establishment of 1-10 memorials in Texas; he has served on the Board of Directors of the 1-11 Monument Builders of the Southwest since 1986, and he acted as the 1-12 organization's president in 1990; and 1-13 WHEREAS, Perry has been responsible for the construction 1-14 and dedication of a number of memorials around Texas, including 1-15 veterans memorials in Lancaster, Midlothian, and Ovilla; and 1-16 WHEREAS, In the late 1980s, Perry and his associate 1-17 David Alton Hudgins began plans to build a veterans memorial 1-18 in Ellis County; after much planning and fund raising, Perry 1-19 and David secured the appropriate financing and location for 1-20 their monument; and 1-21 WHEREAS, Perry, who was responsible for both the design 1-22 of the monument and the research for the names of the war dead, 2-1 traveled throughout Texas to gather ideas for the monument, which 2-2 was finished November 11, 2000; and 2-3 WHEREAS, The Ellis County Veterans Memorial now stands on 2-4 the grounds of Waxahachie's newly constructed Civic Center; this 2-5 enduring symbol of the profound respect the citizens of Ellis 2-6 County hold for those men and women who fought and died for the 2-7 United States is worthy of the respect and admiration of all 2-8 Texans; now, therefore, be it 2-9 RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 2-10 77th Legislature, hereby recognize the noble work of Perry Giles 2-11 in initiating and overseeing the design and construction of the 2-12 Ellis County Veterans Memorial; and, be it further 2-13 RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for 2-14 Perry Giles as an expression of high esteem from the Texas Senate. 2-15 Cain 2-16 ______________________________________ 2-17 President of the Senate 2-18 I hereby certify that the above 2-19 Resolution was adopted by the Senate 2-20 on March 20, 2001. 2-21 ______________________________________ 2-22 Secretary of the Senate 2-23 ______________________________________ 2-24 Member, Texas Senate
