1-1 1 1-2 SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 523 1-3 WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas is pleased to 1-4 recognize Dee and Adair Margo, this year's recipients of the 1-5 League of Women Voters of El Paso's BRAVO Award; and 1-6 WHEREAS, Dee Margo is an alumnus of Vanderbilt University; 1-7 in 1977, he began his career as a vice-president with the 1-8 John D. Williams Company, the largest insurance agency in the 1-9 Southwest, and he currently serves as the company's chief 1-10 executive officer; and 1-11 WHEREAS, Adair Margo also received her undergraduate degree 1-12 from Vanderbilt University, where she studied art history; she 1-13 has become an authority on art in her region, lecturing at 1-14 universities throughout the Southwest, and she is the sole 1-15 representative of the work of renowned Texas writer and painter, 1-16 Tom Lea; and 1-17 WHEREAS, Mrs. Margo also operates the Adair Margo Gallery, 1-18 which has provided national visibility for El Paso's visual 1-19 artists in such museums as the Whitney Museum of American Art, 1-20 the Metropolitan Museum of Art, and the Contemporary Arts Museum 1-21 in Houston; and 2-1 WHEREAS, A fourth-generation resident and a 24-year resident 2-2 of El Paso respectively, Adair and Dee Margo are devoted to their 2-3 community, and their many civic-minded deeds bespeak their 2-4 magnanimous characters; and 2-5 WHEREAS, Mr. Margo served as Civilian Aide to the Secretary 2-6 to the Army from 1990 to 1998; he is the chairman of several 2-7 local and national boards, including the Greater El Paso Chamber 2-8 of Commerce, The University of Texas at El Paso College of Business 2-9 Advisory Council, and the Business-Industry Political Action 2-10 Committee in Washington, D.C.; and 2-11 WHEREAS, Dee Margo has also proven his devotion to his 2-12 community through his work to bring the Border Fund, a fund of 2-13 the Robert McCormick Tribune Foundation, to El Paso, which has 2-14 provided over $16 million for worthy local causes; and 2-15 WHEREAS, Like Dee, Adair has distinguished herself as a 2-16 leader on both a local and national level, working in particular 2-17 to increase arts awareness and to preserve Texas' artistic and 2-18 cultural heritage; she has received an executive appointment to 2-19 the Texas Commission on the Arts, serving as that body's chairman 2-20 for two years; she currently represents Texas on the board of the 2-21 Mid-America Arts Alliance; and 2-22 WHEREAS, Over the years, this exemplary and distinguished 2-23 couple has successfully worked to improve the quality of life for 2-24 El Pasoans and, indeed, for all Texans, and their philanthropy 3-1 has earned Dee and Adair Margo recognition many times over; they 3-2 are truly deserving of their most recent commendation; now, 3-3 therefore, be it 3-4 RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 3-5 77th Legislature, hereby congratulate Dee and Adair Margo 3-6 on receiving the BRAVO Award from the League of Women Voters 3-7 of El Paso; and, be it further 3-8 RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for 3-9 them as an expression of the profound admiration and respect of 3-10 the Texas Senate. 3-11 Shapleigh 3-12 ______________________________________ 3-13 President of the Senate 3-14 I hereby certify that the above 3-15 Resolution was adopted by the Senate 3-16 on March 21, 2001. 3-17 ______________________________________ 3-18 Secretary of the Senate 3-19 ______________________________________ 3-20 Member, Texas Senate
