1-1 1 1-2 SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 533 1-3 WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas joins the 1-4 residents of Hamilton County in declaring Thursday, March 22, 2001, 1-5 as Hamilton County Day at the Capitol; and 1-6 WHEREAS, A county of rural charm and natural beauty, 1-7 Hamilton County is located in Central Texas and was created 1-8 in 1842; the county was named for a South Carolinian, 1-9 Governor James Hamilton, who became an advocate of our state 1-10 during the Texas Revolution; the county was reorganized in 1858 1-11 from Bosque, Comanche, and Lampasas counties; and 1-12 WHEREAS, Hamilton County's colorful history includes such 1-13 characters as teacher Ann Whitney and outlaw Billy the Kid; a 1-14 brave pioneer, Ann Whitney lost her life in an Indian raid while 1-15 protecting her students, and Billy the Kid lived out his life 1-16 peacefully in Hamilton County; and 1-17 WHEREAS, An exemplary Hamilton County citizen from the 1-18 early days was Haskell Harelik; he was a Russian Jew who arrived 1-19 in the county in 1910 selling bananas from a cart and later became 1-20 one of the area's leading entrepreneurs; and 1-21 WHEREAS, Today, young people arrive in Hamilton County 1-22 seeking simpler lives; "immigrants" vary from talented artists 1-23 and writers to young medical practitioners and entrepreneurs who 2-1 are setting their goals for the 21st Century; and 2-2 WHEREAS, Hamilton County consists of picturesque towns and 2-3 rolling hills broken by scenic valleys; Hamilton, the county 2-4 seat, is known for its antique shops and historical homes and 2-5 has been recognized for its business initiatives in bringing 2-6 rural Central Texas to the cutting edge of technology; both of 2-7 the county's major communities, Hico and Hamilton, have formed 2-8 economic development corporations to promote better opportunities 2-9 and a high quality of life for their residents; and 2-10 WHEREAS, Citizens of Hamilton County have preserved the 2-11 natural beauty of their land while keeping pace with modern 2-12 technology, making Hamilton County an unusually pleasing place 2-13 to live or visit; now, therefore, be it 2-14 RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 2-15 77th Legislature, hereby express appreciation to the people 2-16 of Hamilton County for their contributions to the state and 2-17 extend best wishes to them for a celebratory Hamilton County 2-18 Day; and, be it further 2-19 RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for 2-20 Hamilton County as a token of regard from the Texas Senate. 2-21 Sibley 2-22 ______________________________________ 2-23 President of the Senate 2-24 I hereby certify that the above 2-25 Resolution was adopted by the Senate 2-26 on March 22, 2001. 2-27 ______________________________________ 2-28 Secretary of the Senate 2-29 ______________________________________ 2-30 Member, Texas Senate
