 1-2                          SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 546
 1-3           WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas takes pride in
 1-4     recognizing world-famous concert pianist Van Cliburn, who has
 1-5     recently been selected for a Texas Medal of Arts Award for his
 1-6     lifetime achievements; and
 1-7           WHEREAS, Van Cliburn is being honored at the Governor's
 1-8     Mansion Luncheon on March 20, 2001, along with other recipients
 1-9     of the premier Texas Medal of Arts Awards; and
1-10           WHEREAS, Van Cliburn first skyrocketed to fame in 1958 at
1-11     the age of 23 when he won the First International Tchaikovsky
1-12     Competition in Moscow; his sensational victory made news around the
1-13     world and was celebrated by a ticker-tape parade in New York City,
1-14     the only such honor given to a classical musician; and
1-15           WHEREAS, After becoming a highly public figure, Mr. Cliburn
1-16     went on to perform for every United States president for the
1-17     next two decades, and while still at the height of his career,
1-18     he established the Van Cliburn International Piano Competition
1-19     as a living legacy to his commitment to the development of young
1-20     artists; and
1-21           WHEREAS, A remarkably talented musician, Mr. Cliburn has
1-22     received an honorary doctorate degree from the Juilliard School
 2-1     of Music and numerous honorary degrees from other universities,
 2-2     including Baylor University, Loyola University, Texas Christian
 2-3     University, Louisiana State University, and the Moscow
 2-4     Conservatory; and
 2-5           WHEREAS, An exemplary gentleman who has distinguished
 2-6     himself as an artist, Van Cliburn has dedicated his life to
 2-7     nurturing the careers of aspiring young artists; a member of the
 2-8     Board of Trustees for the Interlochen Arts Academy for many years,
 2-9     he established the Van Cliburn Scholarship Lodge and has provided
2-10     scholarships at numerous conservatories worldwide; now, therefore,
2-11     be it
2-12           RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas,
2-13     77th Legislature, hereby commend Van Cliburn on his outstanding
2-14     talent, dedication, and accomplishments and extend congratulations
2-15     to him on earning a Texas Medal of Arts Award; and, be it further
2-16           RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for him
2-17     as an expression of esteem from the Texas Senate.
