 1-2                          SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 553
 1-3           WHEREAS, Rotary International, the world's first service
 1-4     club, builds goodwill and peace, engages in humanitarian service,
 1-5     and encourages high ethical standards in all vocations; and
 1-6           WHEREAS, Founded in Chicago in 1905 as a means of re-creating
 1-7     the friendly cooperation of small-town businesspeople, Rotary is
 1-8     now composed of some 1.2 million men and women working in more
 1-9     than 29,000 Rotary Clubs in 160 countries, all pledged to the
1-10     motto "Service Above Self"; and
1-11           WHEREAS, The Rotary International World Convention is
1-12     being held in San Antonio June 23-27, 2001, and is expected
1-13     to draw 25,000 Rotarians from throughout the world; this
1-14     occasion provides an especially opportune time for Texas
1-15     members to invite their sister-city Rotary Clubs and all other
1-16     international Rotarian friends to visit their communities and
1-17     the many historic and scenic sites and other tourist attractions
1-18     of the Lone Star State; and
1-19           WHEREAS, This is also a fitting time to recognize
1-20     Frank J. Devlyn of Mexico City, president of Rotary International;
1-21     Irving J. "Sonny" Brown of El Paso, vice chairman of the Rotary
1-22     Foundation; and Jim Berg and Dr. Duncan Wimpress of San Antonio,
1-23     chairman and vice chairman, respectively, of the Rotary
1-24     International 2001 Convention Host Committee; and
 2-1           WHEREAS, Texas Rotarians play a significant role in
 2-2     their communities, promoting cultural understanding, business
 2-3     development, and numerous activities for families and youth,
 2-4     including an extensive student-exchange program; special
 2-5     tribute is due these individuals and the following Rotary
 2-6     governors of Texas:  Randall Gleason, District 5520;
 2-7     R. C. Paulette, District 5730; David Stubbeman, District 5790;
 2-8     Linus Wright, District 5810; Bill Rains, District 5830;
 2-9     John Holcomb, District 5840; Patsy Derr, District 5870;
2-10     Charles Clemmons, District 5890; John Germany, District 5910;
2-11     and Billy Settles, District 5930; and
2-12           WHEREAS, Rotarians in Texas and around the world enrich
2-13     their communities in myriad ways, and Rotary International merits
2-14     the support of all Texans and of this body; now, therefore, be it
2-15           RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas,
2-16     77th Legislature, hereby honor all members of the Rotary Clubs
2-17     of Texas for their exemplary public service and extend to them
2-18     sincere best wishes for good fortune in their worthy endeavors.
