 1-2                          SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 568
 1-3           WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas is pleased to
 1-4     recognize the citizens of Dawson on the joyous occasion of
 1-5     the town's 120th anniversary, which is being celebrated
 1-6     Saturday, May 26, 2001; and
 1-7           WHEREAS, This event provides the citizens of Dawson with
 1-8     an opportunity to celebrate the amenities of their town and
 1-9     to show pride in its heritage and its contributions to our
1-10     state; and
1-11           WHEREAS, Established in Southwestern Navarro County, the
1-12     community of Dawson was named for Britton Dawson, a participant
1-13     in the Battle of San Jacinto and a cattle rancher who had moved
1-14     to Texas from Alabama in 1847; and
1-15           WHEREAS, In 1881, the Saint Louis Southwestern Railway
1-16     built a narrow-gauge line from Corsicana to Waco, and Dawson
1-17     became a supply and shipping center for the local farmers; in 1882,
1-18     a post office opened, and by 1883, a lumberyard and a drugstore had
1-19     appeared, and the community had begun to grow into a town; and
1-20           WHEREAS, By 1887, Dawson had a population of 500, and in
1-21     1908, the town was officially incorporated; by 1926, Dawson was
1-22     home to four cotton gins, two banks, a bottling works, a telephone
 2-1     exchange, and a cottonseed oil mill, and in the 1930s and 1950s,
 2-2     Dawson was a town of over 1,100 citizens; the population in 1990
 2-3     was reported as 766; and
 2-4           WHEREAS, In 1956, local Dawson citizens celebrated the town's
 2-5     75th anniversary with a parade and singing, and thereafter, the
 2-6     celebration became a traditional five-year event; this year's
 2-7     120th anniversary celebration will include a street dance, a
 2-8     parade, pony rides, refreshments, and crafts booths; and
 2-9           WHEREAS, The residents of Dawson are hardworking, generous,
2-10     and hospitable and have successfully preserved the town's charm
2-11     and friendly ambience; now, therefore, be it
2-12           RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas,
2-13     77th Legislature, hereby commend the citizens of Dawson and
2-14     extend best wishes to them for a rewarding 120th anniversary
2-15     celebration; and, be it further
2-16           RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for them
2-17     as an expression of high regard from the Texas Senate.
