1-1 1 1-2 SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 582 1-3 In Memory 1-4 of 1-5 Emmett O. Hutto 1-6 WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas joins the citizens 1-7 of Baytown in mourning the loss of highly respected civic leader 1-8 and businessman Emmett O. Hutto, who died March 4, 2001, at the 1-9 age of 82; and 1-10 WHEREAS, The many important achievements of this distinguished 1-11 former Baytown mayor contributed to the development and progress of 1-12 his beloved city and the business community; and 1-13 WHEREAS, The 75-year resident of Baytown was born in Bertram 1-14 in 1918 and graduated from Robert E. Lee High School; he attended 1-15 Lee College in Baytown and The University of Texas at Austin; and 1-16 WHEREAS, During World War II, Emmett became an excellent 1-17 B-24 pilot with 38 missions over Europe and North Africa; the 1-18 honorably discharged captain was awarded the Distinguished 1-19 Flying Cross and an Air Medal with an oak leaf cluster for his 1-20 valiant service; and 2-1 WHEREAS, After the war, Mr. Hutto established himself in 2-2 the Baytown business community with the opening of The Tower 2-3 restaurant in 1946; in 1970 he joined others to build the Ramada 2-4 Tower Center and later became actively involved in real estate 2-5 and development; and 2-6 WHEREAS, Recognized by his associates for his leadership and 2-7 considerable abilities, Mr. Hutto was elected to the city council 2-8 in 1975 and three years later was elected to an unexpired mayoral 2-9 term; serving as mayor from 1978 to 1983 and then again from 1985 2-10 to 1992, he earned the respect and admiration of his fellow 2-11 citizens for his dedication; and 2-12 WHEREAS, A past president of Harris County Mayors and 2-13 Councils, Mr. Hutto was a longtime member of the Baytown 2-14 Boat Club and became a registered scuba diving instructor 2-15 in his 60s; his newfound passion earned him the Professional 2-16 Association of Diving Instructors "eldest active master" 2-17 designation; and 2-18 WHEREAS, The death of such a fine citizen and public 2-19 official is felt not only by his family and friends, but also 2-20 by the constituents he so ably served, and it is appropriate 2-21 that the Texas Senate honor the memory of this respected 2-22 individual; now, therefore, be it 2-23 RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 2-24 77th Legislature, hereby extend sincere condolences to the 3-1 bereaved family of Emmett O. Hutto: his wife, Betty Bailey Hutto; 3-2 his sons and daughters-in-law, Dr. Rodney Hutto and 3-3 Norma Jean Hutto, Dr. Richard Hutto and Diane Hutto, and 3-4 Dr. Dean Hutto and Gena Hutto; his daughter, Cynda Brooke Hutto; 3-5 his brother and sister-in-law, Orvel and Ruth Hutto; and his six 3-6 grandchildren and four great-grandchildren; and, be it further 3-7 RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for his 3-8 family as an expression of deepest sympathy from the Texas Senate, 3-9 and that when the Senate adjourns this day, it do so in memory of 3-10 Emmett O.
