 1-3           WHEREAS, On Wednesday, March 28, 2001, champion race car
 1-4     driver Bobby Labonte, whose home town is Corpus Christi, is
 1-5     coming to the State Capitol, and the Texas Senate is proud to
 1-6     recognize him; and
 1-7           WHEREAS, Accompanied by his wife, Donna, his parents,
 1-8     Bob and Martha Labonte, and his children, Robert Tyler and
 1-9     Madison Elizabeth, Bobby Labonte will receive a real
1-10     Texas-size welcome; and
1-11           WHEREAS, Driving the Number 18 Interstate Batteries Pontiac,
1-12     Mr. Labonte, who drives for Joe Gibbs Racing, won the 2000 NASCAR
1-13     Winston Cup Series Championship, becoming the 24th different
1-14     driver to win the NASCAR Winston Cup Series Championship; and
1-15           WHEREAS, Born on May 8, 1964, in Corpus Christi, Texas,
1-16     Bobby began his Winston Cup career in 1984 as a crew member
1-17     at Hagan Racing, where his brother, Terry, won the series
1-18     championship; and
1-19           WHEREAS, Bobby Labonte's first Winston Cup win in
1-20     Charlotte, North Carolina, on May 28, 1995, set the stage for
1-21     a most impressive career; during the course of the 2000 season,
 2-1     Mr. Labonte led in more races than anyone in the series, 23 of
 2-2     34 events, and he clinched the title with a single race remaining;
 2-3     and
 2-4           WHEREAS, Bobby scored his career-best finish and finished
 2-5     in the top 10 in the NASCAR Winston Cup point standing for the
 2-6     fourth straight year; Pontiac scored 11 victories in 2000, tying
 2-7     the most victories by Pontiac in a single season in the modern
 2-8     era; and
 2-9           WHEREAS, Scoring more points than any other driver during the
2-10     first and second half of the 2000 season, Bobby finished with
2-11     2,603 points over the final 17 events of the season; over the
2-12     final 15 races of 2000, Mr. Labonte scored 10 top-five finishes,
2-13     including three victories; and
2-14           WHEREAS, Bobby Labonte and his brother, Terry, are the only
2-15     brothers to win the NASCAR Winston Cup Series Championship in
2-16     the 52-year history of the sport; Bobby's final point total of
2-17     5,130 is the third highest total ever recorded in the modern
2-18     era; and
2-19           WHEREAS, Since 1995, the talented driver has finished in
2-20     the top 10 in the final point standings five times; he was the
2-21     runner-up in 1999; and
2-22           WHEREAS, Winning the 2000 NASCAR Winston Cup Series showed
2-23     his skill, excellence, and consistency, and this outstanding
 3-1     competitor is certainly worthy of legislative recognition; now,
 3-2     therefore, be it
 3-3           RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas,
 3-4     77th Legislature, hereby commend and applaud Bobby Labonte for
 3-5     his well-earned victory in the 2000 NASCAR Winston Cup Series;
 3-6     and, be it further
 3-7           RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for him
 3-8     as an expression of the sincere admiration and esteem of the
 3-9     Texas Senate.
