 1-5                               Aurelia Juarez
 1-6           WHEREAS, Aurelia Juarez of Houston, who passed away on
 1-7     January 13, 2001, at the age of 23, was greatly beloved by her
 1-8     family and a legion of friends for her life of courage, commitment
 1-9     to community, and tremendous resolve; and
1-10           WHEREAS, Born on April 9, 1977, in Chicago and raised in
1-11     Houston, Aurelia was a young woman of extraordinary promise who
1-12     had determined on a career in law and in politics; indeed, her
1-13     numerous hechos, or accomplishments, signified that her dreams
1-14     of becoming a judge, even of becoming the Governor of Texas and a
1-15     United States Supreme Court Justice, might be realized; and
1-16           WHEREAS, At the time of her passing, Aurelia Juarez was a
1-17     first-year student at the South Texas College of Law and a legal
1-18     assistant with the Dovalina & Eureste law firm, where she had worked
1-19     for six years; she completed her undergraduate education at the
1-20     University of Houston, where she majored in political science and
1-21     minored in Mexican American Studies; and
 2-1           WHEREAS, In college Ms. Juarez served as president of the
 2-2     Hispanic Student Association and of Delta Zeta Sorority; she was
 2-3     elected Most Outstanding Officer of the former group for three
 2-4     consecutive years and voted Most Outstanding New Member of the
 2-5     latter; she also participated in the Council of Campus Leaders,
 2-6     Council of Ethnic Organizations, and other groups; and
 2-7           WHEREAS, The numerous scholarships she was awarded amply
 2-8     testify to her hard work and academic success; Aurelia Juarez was a
 2-9     statewide debating champion with the National Hispanic Institute,
2-10     the recipient of the Houston Alumnae Association's Outstanding
2-11     Senior award, and a member of Omicron Delta Kappa, a national
2-12     leadership honorary society; and
2-13           WHEREAS, For Aurelia Juarez, community service and
2-14     community activism were fundamental; she conducted a voter
2-15     registration drive among seniors at her former high school and
2-16     gave generously of her time to the Chicano Learning Center, to
2-17     Navidad en el Barrio, a Christmas project for those in need, and
2-18     to the Go Tejano Scholarship Committee; actively involved in the
2-19     League of United Latin American Citizens, she had already been
2-20     to three national conventions and served as special assistant to
2-21     the national president; and
2-22           WHEREAS, This admirable and accomplished woman was driven
2-23     to achieve, not only because she possessed the personal talents
2-24     that make high achievement possible, but also because she wanted
 3-1     passionately to help level the playing field for Latinos in
 3-2     education, economic opportunity, and politics; in her honor her
 3-3     family and friends are establishing a most fitting memorial,
 3-4     a scholarship for other young Hispanic women seeking to become
 3-5     attorneys; thus the remarkable light that blazed in Aurelia Juarez,
 3-6     and that will long live on in the hearts of those she knew and
 3-7     loved, will also shine for others embarked on a similar, valiant
 3-8     journey; now, therefore, be it
 3-9           RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas,
3-10     77th Legislature, hereby pay special tribute to the life of
3-11     Aurelia Juarez and extend sincere condolences to the members of
3-12     her family:  her parents, Jose R. and Maria Lourdes Juarez; her
3-13     brothers and sisters-in-law and her sisters and brothers-in-law,
3-14     Rodrigo and Graciela Juarez, Jorge and Ester Juarez, Israel Juarez,
3-15     Manuel and Carmela Juarez, Jose Juarez, Reynaldo Juarez,
3-16     Leticia and Salvador Rico, Marianela Juarez, Elida Juarez, and
3-17     Brenda Ante; and her other relatives and many friends; and, be it
3-18     further
3-19           RESOLVED, That an official copy of this Resolution be
3-20     prepared for the members of her family as an expression of deepest
3-21     sympathy from the Texas Senate, and that when the Senate adjourns
3-22     this day, it do so in memory of Aurelia Juarez.
