 1-4                                     of
 1-5                             David Malcolm Smith
 1-6           WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas joins the
 1-7     citizens of San Angelo in mourning the death of a respected
 1-8     civic leader, David Malcolm Smith, who died at the age of 68;
 1-9     and
1-10           WHEREAS, A native of San Angelo, David was born
1-11     March 2, 1933, the son of Paul M. and Margaret Harris Smith
1-12     and the grandson of the pioneer rancher, Frank L. Harris; and
1-13           WHEREAS, After attending Alamo Heights High School in
1-14     San Antonio, David earned his degree in accounting from Trinity
1-15     University and did postgraduate work at The University of Texas;
1-16     and
1-17           WHEREAS, David went on to establish a successful accounting
1-18     practice and also worked as a budget director for GTED in Florida;
1-19     he then moved back to San Angelo to help manage his family's ranch;
1-20     he and his wife, Jan, later founded Adventure Travel; and
 2-1           WHEREAS, His fellow San Angelo citizens will always remember
 2-2     David's enthusiasm for their community; he worked to preserve the
 2-3     local culture and heritage of his native town, serving as president
 2-4     of the local Convention and Visitors Bureau; he also served as the
 2-5     first chairman of the board for the Texas Forts Trail program; and
 2-6           WHEREAS, A man of many interests and talents, David loved
 2-7     history and was an accomplished photographer whose work chronicled
 2-8     the beautiful images of the people and places he had visited around
 2-9     the world; his special talent was storytelling, and he loved to
2-10     elicit smiles and laughter from his family and the many friends he
2-11     entertained; and
2-12           WHEREAS, David was a devoted Episcopalian; he served as
2-13     senior warden and vestry member at Emmanuel Episcopal Church; and
2-14           WHEREAS, David will be remembered by all who knew him as
2-15     a delightful, caring person, who deeply loved San Angelo; his
2-16     abundant kindness and warmth will be remembered by all who knew
2-17     him; now, therefore, be it
2-18           RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas,
2-19     77th Legislature, hereby extend condolences to the family of
2-20     David Malcolm Smith:  his wife, Jan; his children, Leasel Smith,
2-21     Shannon Smith Stephens, and Margaret Victoria Smith; his son-in-law,
2-22     David Stephens; and his grandchildren, Harris and Helen Stephens;
2-23     and, be it further
2-24           RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for his
 3-1     family as an expression of deepest sympathy from the Texas Senate,
 3-2     and that when the Senate adjourns this day, it do so in memory of
 3-3     David Malcolm Smith.
