1-1 ****** NEED TWO-PAGE HEADER ****** 1-2 SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 605 1-3 WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas takes pride 1-4 in recognizing the German exchange students who are visiting 1-5 James Bowie High School in extending to them a warm welcome on 1-6 the occasion of their tour of the Capitol on April 2, 2001; and 1-7 WHEREAS, The exchange students are participating in the 1-8 German-American Partnership Program which is part of the Goethe 1-9 Institute, an international organization sponsored by the German 1-10 government; since its establishment in 1977, the program has 1-11 helped promote German instruction in high schools throughout 1-12 the United States and has educated young people with regard to 1-13 the host country's culture and way of life; and 1-14 WHEREAS, Miriam "Mimi" Parris is the James Bowie High School 1-15 teacher who sponsors the school's exchange program; she began 1-16 sponsoring exchanges with the Munich area in 1989, first with a 1-17 high school in Pullach and then with Gymnasium Oberhaching, a high 1-18 school southeast of Munich; and 1-19 WHEREAS, Today, there are 720 partnerships between American 1-20 high schools and German schools; in 1999, 6,604 German students 1-21 visited their American partner school, and 4,782 American students 1-22 traveled to Germany through the German-American Partnership Program; 2-1 and 2-2 WHEREAS, The German exchange students visiting 2-3 James Bowie High School are Cornelia Jergus, Alice Lichtenberg, 2-4 Marie-Luise Marhofer, Friederike Niepmann, Elisabeth Poesl, 2-5 Corinna Verhasselt, Hannah Wirmer, Marc-Alexander Bair, 2-6 Michael Forster, Patrick Jansch, Johannes Linde, and Alexander Rott; 2-7 their teacher sponsors are Eleonore Vickers and Gabi Sussmann; and 2-8 WHEREAS, It is a genuine pleasure to have these students 2-9 and their teacher sponsors as guests in the Lone Star State, and 2-10 it is sincerely hoped that their visit here is a most enjoyable 2-11 one; now, therefore, be it 2-12 RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 2-13 77th Legislature, hereby extend hospitality and a warm welcome 2-14 to each of these students and teachers and recognize them as 2-15 Honorary Texans with all attendant rights and privileges thereof; 2-16 and, be it further 2-17 RESOLVED, That copies of this Resolution be prepared for 2-18 them as an expression of esteem from the Texas Senate. 2-19 Barrientos 2-20 ______________________________________ 2-21 President of the Senate 2-22 I hereby certify that the above 2-23 Resolution was adopted by the Senate 2-24 on March 29, 2001. 2-25 ______________________________________ 2-26 Secretary of the Senate 2-27 ______________________________________ 2-28 Member, Texas Senate
