1-1 1 1-2 SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 624 1-3 WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas is pleased to join 1-4 citizens of Fannin County in celebrating April 10, 2001, as 1-5 Fannin County Day at the State Capitol; and 1-6 WHEREAS, Located in northeast Texas along the Red River 1-7 Valley, Fannin County was originally populated by Caddo Indians; 1-8 by 1836, permanent settlement of the area had begun when several 1-9 families arrived to build their homes on the rolling prairie; and 1-10 WHEREAS, Fannin was the first original county created in 1-11 1837 by the Congress of the Republic of Texas from the larger 1-12 Red River County; the Texas Congress first thought to name the 1-13 new county Independence, but later settled on Fannin, in honor 1-14 of James Walker Fannin, Jr., a martyred hero of the Texas 1-15 Revolution; and 1-16 WHEREAS, Bonham, the county seat, was founded in 1836 by 1-17 Judge Bailey Inglish, who originally named the settlement 1-18 Bois d'Arc after the area's native trees; the name of the town 1-19 became Bonham in 1844, in honor of James B. Bonham, the famous 1-20 messenger in the Battle of the Alamo; and 1-21 WHEREAS, Fannin County is quite proud of its native son, 2-1 Sam Rayburn, who began his distinguished political career in 2-2 the Texas House of Representatives, where he served one year 2-3 as speaker; later, Sam Rayburn went to Washington, D.C., as a 2-4 congressman and was reelected to that position for 48 years; 2-5 during his tenure as congressman, Mr. Sam served as speaker of 2-6 the United States House of Representatives for 17 years, longer 2-7 than any other individual in history; and 2-8 WHEREAS, Its final boundaries were fixed by 1846, and by 2-9 1900, the county had over 50,000 residents and was a significant 2-10 producer of livestock and other agricultural products; by the end 2-11 of the 20th century, Fannin County's farming economy also included 2-12 manufacturing and retail businesses; and 2-13 WHEREAS, The Bonham Area Chamber of Commerce was established 2-14 in 1886 as the Board of Trade; renamed the chamber of commerce 2-15 in 1926, it has been instrumental in bringing jobs and new 2-16 residents to Bonham and Fannin County, and it is the driving 2-17 force for social and economic change; and 2-18 WHEREAS, Citizens of Fannin County have much to be proud of; 2-19 their home has played an important role in the history of Texas, 2-20 and it will continue to be vital to the state's well-being as an 2-21 agribusiness center; a grand place, with industrious, civic-minded 2-22 residents, Fannin County can look forward to a bright future; now, 2-23 therefore, be it 2-24 RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 3-1 77th Legislature, hereby extend best wishes to the citizens of 3-2 Fannin County for a most enjoyable and successful Fannin County 3-3 Day; and, be it further 3-4 RESOLVED, That an official copy of this Resolution be 3-5 prepared for Fannin County as a memento of this grand occasion 3-6 and as an expression of high regard from the Texas Senate. 3-7 Cain 3-8 Armbrister Harris Shapiro 3-9 Barrientos Haywood Shapleigh 3-10 Bernsen Jackson Sibley 3-11 Bivins Lindsay Staples 3-12 Brown Lucio Truan 3-13 Carona Madla Van de Putte 3-14 Duncan Moncrief Wentworth 3-15 Ellis Nelson West 3-16 Fraser Ogden Whitmire 3-17 Gallegos Zaffirini 3-18 Ratliff, President of the Senate 3-19 ______________________________________ 3-20 President of the Senate 3-21 I hereby certify that the above 3-22 Resolution was adopted by the Senate 3-23 on April 10, 2001. 3-24 ______________________________________ 3-25 Secretary of the Senate 3-26 ______________________________________ 3-27 Member, Texas Senate
