 1-2                          SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 627
 1-3           WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas is proud to
 1-4     recognize one of its fine young citizens, Amit Bushan, who has
 1-5     recently received the distinct honor of being named Texas' top
 1-6     middle level student volunteer by the Prudential Spirit of
 1-7     Community Awards; and
 1-8           WHEREAS, The Prudential Spirit of Community Awards is
 1-9     a nationwide program honoring young people for outstanding
1-10     volunteer service; now in its sixth year, the program is
1-11     sponsored by The Prudential Insurance Company of America in
1-12     partnership with the National Association of Secondary School
1-13     Principals; and
1-14           WHEREAS, A fifth grader at All Saints Episcopal School
1-15     in Lubbock, Amit was among 23,000 high school and middle level
1-16     school children who were considered for the award; the initiative
1-17     and maturity he displayed in conducting his service campaign to
1-18     inform local residents about the dangers of second-hand smoke
1-19     truly distinguish this young man among his peers; and
1-20           WHEREAS, An asthma sufferer, Amit began his campaign
1-21     last summer when he found it impossible to accompany friends
1-22     to restaurants and other public places because second-hand
 2-1     smoke in those areas made it difficult for him to breathe; and
 2-2           WHEREAS, Amit gathered data on second-hand smoke to
 2-3     prove its harmful effects; he then developed a slide show on
 2-4     the subject and began visiting local elementary schools to
 2-5     deliver his message on the dangers of second-hand smoke; and
 2-6           WHEREAS, Amit also organized a letter-writing campaign,
 2-7     contacted the local media, and met with civic leaders to lobby
 2-8     for a smoking ban in Lubbock's restaurants and other public
 2-9     places; and
2-10           WHEREAS, His efforts have attracted the attention of
2-11     30 organizations, including the American Cancer Society and
2-12     the American Heart Association, and Amit has collected nearly
2-13     $4,000 in donations; he hopes to convince the Lubbock city
2-14     council to ban restaurant smoking, and if successful, Amit
2-15     will take his campaign to the state legislature; and
2-16           WHEREAS, As a recipient of the Prudential Spirit of
2-17     Community Award, Amit will receive an all-expense-paid trip
2-18     to Washington, D.C., a $1,000 cash award, and an engraved
2-19     silver medallion; and
2-20           WHEREAS, An enterprising young man, Amit has shown
2-21     discipline and determination beyond his years; even more, he
2-22     has demonstrated concern for the well-being of others; the
2-23     State of Texas is truly proud to have Amit Bushan as one of
 3-1     its citizens; now, therefore, be it
 3-2           RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas,
 3-3     77th Legislature, hereby congratulate Amit Bushan on being
 3-4     chosen as a recipient of this year's Prudential Spirit of
 3-5     Community Award; and, be it further
 3-6           RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for
 3-7     him as an expression of high regard from the Texas Senate.
