1-1 1 1-2 SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 643 1-3 WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas is pleased to 1-4 recognize the citizens of San Antonio on the grand occasion of 1-5 Fiesta San Antonio, which takes place April 20-April 29, 2001; 1-6 and 1-7 WHEREAS, Managed by the Fiesta San Antonio Commission, 1-8 Fiesta is a 10-day celebration of our state's heritage and of 1-9 the culture of San Antonio; the celebration entails more than 150 1-10 events organized by over 90 nonprofit organizations; approximately 1-11 75,000 volunteers participate in sponsoring Fiesta's vast array 1-12 of activities; and 1-13 WHEREAS, The annual Fiesta tradition began in 1891 when 1-14 a parade to honor the heroes of the battles of the Alamo and 1-15 San Jacinto was organized by a group of San Antonio women; 1-16 entitled the Battle of Flowers Parade, the event later blossomed 1-17 into a major yearly festival; and 1-18 WHEREAS, Today, the Battle of Flowers Parade continues to 1-19 be a major Fiesta highlight, along with other popular traditions 1-20 that have developed over the years, such as the Fiesta Flambeau 1-21 Parade, the largest illuminated parade in the country, and the 1-22 Texas Cavaliers' River Parade; and 2-1 WHEREAS, Other entertainment includes A Night in 2-2 Old San Antonio, a four-day celebration that takes place 2-3 in the restored 17th-century quarter known as La Villita; 2-4 the celebration recreates the dress, food, and music of the 2-5 early days of San Antonio and is sponsored by the San Antonio 2-6 Conservation Society; and 2-7 WHEREAS, Fiesta offers music concerts, sports tournaments, 2-8 historic neighborhood tours, and attractions such as the Fiesta 2-9 River Art Show, Fiesta San Fernando, and the Mission San Jose 2-10 Spring Fiesta; this year's Fiesta opens with an all-day conference 2-11 at San Antonio College entitled "The Ethnic Community in History"; 2-12 and 2-13 WHEREAS, Fiesta is a treasured San Antonio tradition 2-14 that emphasizes the culture and history of the city and brings 2-15 its citizens together in a festive community spirit; many of 2-16 its sensational events benefit charities, and the entire 10-day 2-17 celebration is a source of pride and enjoyment to San Antonians 2-18 and Texans across the state; now, therefore, be it 2-19 RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 2-20 77th Legislature, hereby commend the sponsors and organizers 2-21 of Fiesta San Antonio on their hard work and generous spirit 2-22 and extend best wishes to all for a highly successful festival 2-23 in 2001. 2-24 Wentworth, Madla, 2-25 Van de Putte, Zaffirini 3-1 Armbrister Fraser Nelson 3-2 Barrientos Gallegos Ogden 3-3 Bernsen Harris Shapiro 3-4 Bivins Haywood Shapleigh 3-5 Brown Jackson Sibley 3-6 Cain Lindsay Staples 3-7 Carona Lucio Truan 3-8 Duncan Moncrief West 3-9 Ellis Whitmire 3-10 Ratliff, President of the Senate 3-11 ______________________________ _______________________________ 3-12 Member, Texas Senate Member, Texas Senate 3-13 ______________________________ _______________________________ 3-14 Member, Texas Senate Member, Texas Senate 3-15 _______________________________ 3-16 President of the Senate 3-17 I hereby certify that the 3-18 above Resolution was adopted by 3-19 the Senate on April 5, 2001. 3-20 _______________________________ 3-21 Secretary of the Senate
