 1-2                          SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 661
 1-3           WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas takes pleasure
 1-4     in recognizing Garnet Patterson, who is retiring after nearly
 1-5     20 years of loyal service as a schoolteacher in the Waxahachie
 1-6     school system; and
 1-7           WHEREAS, Garnet Patterson spent her youth in Akron, Ohio,
 1-8     and moved to Europe with her family when she was nine years old;
 1-9     she lived in Spain during the Spanish Civil War and then moved to
1-10     Switzerland, Brazil, and South Africa before returning to Akron to
1-11     attend college; and
1-12           WHEREAS, She left college to serve her country during
1-13     World War II and became a language teacher in the United States
1-14     Navy; after the war, she returned to Ohio, attended a variety of
1-15     colleges, and earned a bachelor's degree from Western Reserve
1-16     College; she taught in several school districts until her
1-17     retirement in 1981 when she moved to Texas; and
1-18           WHEREAS, In 1982, Mrs. Patterson resumed a career as a
1-19     schoolteacher when she joined the Waxahachie school system; while
1-20     teaching, she attended college and earned a master's degree at the
1-21     age of 60 from Texas Woman's University; and
1-22           WHEREAS, A uniquely talented individual, Garnet Patterson
1-23     speaks four languages and has distinguished herself in her career
 2-1     as a schoolteacher; she is now retiring at the age of 80 from her
 2-2     position as a bilingual teacher at Dunaway and North Side elementary
 2-3     schools; and
 2-4           WHEREAS, Mrs. Patterson's students have greatly benefitted
 2-5     from her skillful teaching methods, her sincere concern for the
 2-6     individual, and her wise counsel and encouragement; and
 2-7           WHEREAS, A dedicated and resourceful educator, Mrs. Patterson
 2-8     has instilled in her students an appreciation for hard work and a
 2-9     love of challenge and learning; now, therefore, be it
2-10           RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas,
2-11     77th Legislature, hereby commend Garnet Patterson for her many
2-12     contributions to the educational system of Texas and extend best
2-13     wishes to her for the retirement years ahead; and, be it further
2-14           RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for her
2-15     as an expression of esteem from the Texas Senate.
