 1-2                          SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 666
 1-3           WHEREAS, On April 9-10, 2001, many fine residents from
 1-4     Wise County are gathering in Austin to celebrate Wise County Days
 1-5     at the State Capitol; and
 1-6           WHEREAS, Established in 1856 from Cooke County, the
 1-7     county is named for Henry A. Wise, a United States Congressman
 1-8     from Virginia who supported the annexation of Texas; and
 1-9           WHEREAS, In its early years, the county relied on its
1-10     cattle and sheep production to spur growth; throughout the
1-11     years, Wise County has undergone many changes and now benefits
1-12     from a diverse economy that is centered around agribusiness,
1-13     petroleum, tourism, and manufacturing; on the northwest edge
1-14     of the Dallas-Fort Worth Metroplex, Wise is one of the 25
1-15     fastest-growing counties in the state; and
1-16           WHEREAS, Decatur serves as the county seat and is
1-17     home to such notable attractions as the Waggoner Mansion,
1-18     Old Stone Prison, the Wise County Heritage Museum, and the
1-19     historic pink granite Wise County Courthouse built in 1895;
1-20     other towns in the county include Bridgeport, Alvord, Aurora,
1-21     Boyd, Briar, Chico, Fairview, Greenwood, Lake Bridgeport,
1-22     Newark, Paradise, Rhome, Runaway Bay, and Slidell; and
 2-1           WHEREAS, Area residents uphold the county's heritage
 2-2     with traditional annual events such as Butterfield Stage Days
 2-3     and Chisolm Trail Days, and Lake Bridgeport, Eagle Mountain Lake,
 2-4     and the Lyndon Baines Johnson National Grasslands provide a wide
 2-5     range of outdoor opportunities; and
 2-6           WHEREAS, The citizens of Wise County can be justifiably
 2-7     proud of their history and progressive development, and it is
 2-8     indeed appropriate to take this opportunity to recognize the
 2-9     outstanding role the county is playing in the annals of this
2-10     state; now, therefore, be it
2-11           RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas,
2-12     77th Legislature, hereby recognize April 9-10, 2001, as
2-13     Wise County Days at the State Capitol and extend to its
2-14     citizens warmest best wishes for a memorable and enjoyable
2-15     visit.
