 1-4                                     of
 1-5                               Hector R. Garza
 1-6           WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas joins the
 1-7     citizens of San Antonio in mourning the tragic loss of
 1-8     Officer Hector R. Garza, who died Thursday, March 29, 2001,
 1-9     at the age of 48; and
1-10           WHEREAS, Born August 22, 1952, in San Antonio, Hector Garza
1-11     graduated in 1970 from Central Catholic Marianist High School,
1-12     where he was a member of the Lloyd Rifles Freshman Drill Team;
1-13     he served in the United States Army as a non-commissioned officer
1-14     from 1971 to 1973; and
1-15           WHEREAS, Hector Garza joined the San Antonio Police Department
1-16     in January of 1975 and chose to patrol the West Side, where he had
1-17     spent his youth; and
1-18           WHEREAS, Officer Garza was devoted to his work in law
1-19     enforcement and was dedicated to making the City of San Antonio
1-20     a safer place in which to live, work, and raise families; and
 2-1           WHEREAS, Well known for his courage and dependability,
 2-2     Officer Garza was killed in the line of duty after more than
 2-3     25 years of outstanding service in the San Antonio Police
 2-4     Department; and
 2-5           WHEREAS, An exemplary gentleman who distinguished himself
 2-6     in his career, Officer Garza was beloved by his fellow police
 2-7     officers and was respected in the community for his leadership
 2-8     and his many accomplishments; and
 2-9           WHEREAS, He participated in track in the first Police
2-10     Olympics, played in the police softball intramurals and in
2-11     city leagues, and coached the Saint Martin's Hall Kinder
2-12     Basketball Team; his hobbies included collecting Beatles
2-13     memorabilia and running; and
2-14           WHEREAS, He graduated from Wayland Baptist University with
2-15     a degree in history in 1999; he often spoke of his desire to
2-16     have a second career as a high school teacher; and
2-17           WHEREAS, A man of integrity, strength, and generosity, he
2-18     gave unselfishly of his time to others, and his wisdom, warmth,
2-19     and sense of humor will not be forgotten by those who knew him;
2-20     and
2-21           WHEREAS, Hector Garza lived his life to the fullest and was
2-22     a devoted husband and father, and he leaves behind memories that
2-23     will be treasured forever by his family and many friends; now,
 3-1     therefore, be it
 3-2           RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas,
 3-3     77th Legislature, hereby extend sincere condolences to the
 3-4     bereaved family of Hector R. Garza:  his wife, Gilda Z. Garza;
 3-5     his sons, Hector "Troy" Garza, Jr., and Jason Aaron, Matthew,
 3-6     and Joshua Garza; his daughter, Ryann Garza; his parents,
 3-7     Mr. and Mrs. Reynaldo S. Garza; his brother, Rey Garza, Jr.;
 3-8     and his sister, Virginia Garza Craig; and, be it further
 3-9           RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for the
3-10     members of his family as an expression of deepest sympathy from
3-11     the Texas Senate, and that when the Senate adjourns this day, it
3-12     do so in memory of Hector Garza.
