1-1 ****** NEED TWO-PAGE HEADER ****** 1-2 SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 671 1-3 WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas joins the citizens 1-4 of Houston in bidding farewell to a beloved local radio executive, 1-5 Ernest Jackson, Jr.; and 1-6 WHEREAS, Vice president and general manager at both KMJQ 1-7 Majic 102 and KBXX 97.9 The Box, Ernie will be retiring on 1-8 April 30, 2001; his departure marks the beginning of his ambitious 1-9 community service undertaking to create a charitable foundation for 1-10 AIDS; and 1-11 WHEREAS, Ernie's foundation, to be called Project WAVE or 1-12 War Against the Virus Escalating, will build upon the success of an 1-13 HIV/AIDS screening campaign begun by his Houston radio stations in 1-14 1999, when almost 4,000 predominately African American Houstonians 1-15 came to be tested for AIDS and HIV in exchange for free concert 1-16 tickets; and 1-17 WHEREAS, Ernie's program, which will continue after his 1-18 departure, was regarded as a resounding success and earned high 1-19 praise from Steven L. Walker, the HIV Prevention Program manager 1-20 for the Houston Health Department; and 1-21 WHEREAS, Ernie will leave Houston for New York, where city 1-22 health officials and the New York City mayor's office have asked 2-1 him to launch his campaign; Boston, Los Angeles, and Cleveland 2-2 will also participate in Project WAVE; and 2-3 WHEREAS, Named by Radio Ink as one of the Top 25 Most 2-4 Successful African Americans in Radio, Ernie has accumulated great 2-5 professional success; his work to prevent AIDS in America's urban 2-6 centers has now garnered him a reputation as a distinguished 2-7 philanthropist; now, therefore, be it 2-8 RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 2-9 77th Legislature, hereby bid farewell to its longtime citizen 2-10 Ernest Jackson, Jr., and wish him best of luck with Project WAVE; 2-11 and, be it further 2-12 RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for 2-13 Ernie as an expression of high esteem from the Texas Senate. 2-14 Ellis 2-15 ______________________________________ 2-16 President of the Senate 2-17 I hereby certify that the above 2-18 Resolution was adopted by the Senate 2-19 on April 5, 2001. 2-20 ______________________________________ 2-21 Secretary of the Senate 2-22 ______________________________________ 2-23 Member, Texas Senate
