 1-2                          SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 672
 1-3           WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas joins the
 1-4     residents of Liberty County in declaring April 9, 2001,
 1-5     Liberty County Day at the Capitol; and
 1-6           WHEREAS, A county of rural charm and natural beauty,
 1-7     Liberty County is located in the heart of Southeast Texas and
 1-8     is rich in Texas history; it was in Liberty County that the
 1-9     Spanish established one of their earliest outposts, Atascosito,
1-10     in 1756; in 1818, the legendary French colony, Champ d'Asile,
1-11     was established on the county's land; and
1-12           WHEREAS, In 1826, the Anglo colonists and Mexican
1-13     authorities established the Atascosito District, and in 1831,
1-14     they designated a new municipality Villa de la Santisima Trinidad
1-15     de la Libertad, which later became the county seat, Liberty; the
1-16     town served as the seat of government for the Atascosito District,
1-17     which initially embraced 10 modern-day counties in Southeast Texas;
1-18     and
1-19           WHEREAS, Liberty County was one of the original 23 counties
1-20     in existence when the Republic of Texas was officially organized
1-21     in 1836; it was also the home of Colonel Edward Bradford Pickett,
1-22     who served in the State Senate during the 12th and 13th legislative
 2-1     sessions and was president of the 1875 Texas Constitutional
 2-2     Convention; and
 2-3           WHEREAS, Liberty County is proud of the service of its
 2-4     native son, the late Price Daniel, the 38th Governor of Texas,
 2-5     who was born in Dayton in 1910; the county was also home to
 2-6     Ross S. Sterling, the 31st Governor of Texas; and
 2-7           WHEREAS, In spite of the county's proximity to Houston,
 2-8     much of the county's land has been left undisturbed, and new
 2-9     development and population growth have been managed with care
2-10     in order to preserve natural habitats and historic sites; and
2-11           WHEREAS, Bisected by the Trinity River and home to
2-12     Wallisville Lake, Liberty County is a popular area for fishing
2-13     and hunting, and tourists are drawn to the Big Thicket and the
2-14     county's rolling hills and pine forests; and
2-15           WHEREAS, Liberty County Day at the Capitol provides an
2-16     opportunity for residents to gather together and celebrate the
2-17     amenities of their county and its heritage; now, therefore, be it
2-18           RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas,
2-19     77th Legislature, hereby extend a warm welcome to the people of
2-20     Liberty County and best wishes to them for a joyous Liberty County
2-21     Day; and, be it further
2-22           RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for
2-23     the residents of Liberty County as a token of esteem from the
 3-1     Texas Senate.
