1-1 1 1-2 SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 673 1-3 WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas proudly recognizes 1-4 John H. Shoaf for his distinguished career over the past 35 years 1-5 as an international trade specialist; and 1-6 WHEREAS, A native Texan, Mr. Shoaf was born July 30, 1916; 1-7 he is a graduate of Washington and Lee University, where he earned 1-8 his bachelor of arts degree in international economics; and 1-9 WHEREAS, Mr. Shoaf served his country faithfully as a member 1-10 of the Armed Forces of the United States, attaining the rank of 1-11 lieutenant colonel in the United States Army Reserve; he is also 1-12 a graduate of the Adjutant General's School, the Command and 1-13 General Staff College, and the Civil Affairs School; and 1-14 WHEREAS, After working for several years for the 1-15 international divisions of several prominent United States 1-16 corporations, Mr. Shoaf began his career with the United States 1-17 Department of Commerce in 1962; and 1-18 WHEREAS, During his distinguished tenure with the Department 1-19 of Commerce, Mr. Shoaf was integral to the development of economic 1-20 policy both abroad and at home; and 1-21 WHEREAS, The Assistant Secretary of Commerce, the Assistant 2-1 Secretary of State, and the United Nations have recognized 2-2 Mr. Shoaf's expertise in economic planning and development and 2-3 have requested his assistance; during his career, Mr. Shoaf had 2-4 the pleasure of working closely with the governments of Puerto Rico, 2-5 Guatemala, and Ecuador; and 2-6 WHEREAS, Recognized many times over for his work, 2-7 Mr. Shoaf has received numerous honors and citations, including 2-8 the United States Department of Commerce's Superior Service 2-9 Award and the Order of the Crown of Belgium; and 2-10 WHEREAS, Mr. Shoaf retired from his service with the 2-11 United States Government on October 31, 1977; throughout 2-12 his 35-year career as an international trade specialist, he 2-13 never failed to represent his country in an exemplary and 2-14 distinguished manner; and 2-15 WHEREAS, The variety of his work and the longevity of 2-16 his career attest to Mr. Shoaf's extraordinary integrity 2-17 and capability; a man who has been consistently used by 2-18 the highest-ranking officials of our nation for culturally 2-19 sensitive and intellectually demanding assignments, he is 2-20 indeed a consummate professional; now, therefore, be it 2-21 RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 2-22 77th Legislature, hereby extend its deepest gratitude to 2-23 John Shoaf for the years of exemplary service he has rendered 2-24 to his state and nation; and, be it further 3-1 RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared 3-2 for Mr. Shoaf as an expression of the highest esteem from the 3-3 Texas Senate. 3-4 Bernsen 3-5 ______________________________________ 3-6 President of the Senate 3-7 I hereby certify that the above 3-8 Resolution was adopted by the Senate 3-9 on April 5, 2001. 3-10 ______________________________________ 3-11 Secretary of the Senate 3-12 ______________________________________ 3-13 Member, Texas Senate
