 1-5                         Theodore Stephen Scibienski
 1-6           WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas joins the
 1-7     citizens of Corpus Christi and South Texas in mourning the
 1-8     passing of one of the area's most esteemed and well-loved
 1-9     residents, Theodore Stephen Scibienski, who died at the age
1-10     of 89; and
1-11           WHEREAS, Filling all of his allotted time on earth with
1-12     devotion to his family, friends, church, and community, he leaves
1-13     a legacy of dedication to improving health care for the children
1-14     of South Texas that will be cherished by generations yet to come;
1-15     and
1-16           WHEREAS, Affectionately known by his friends as Ted or
1-17     Mr. Ted, the native of Perth Amboy, New Jersey, was born
1-18     October 24, 1910; having received his electrical engineering
1-19     degree from Rutgers University, he pursued graduate studies
1-20     at Columbia University and Brooklyn Polytechnic Institute; and
1-21           WHEREAS, Unable to find suitable work in New Jersey, the
1-22     enterprising young man headed south, concluding his journey in
 2-1     Corpus Christi with $1.50 in his pocket; beginning his notable
 2-2     career as a construction worker, Mr. Scibienski soon after became
 2-3     involved in the oil and gas business and retired after selling the
 2-4     LaGloria Oil and Gas Company partnership; and
 2-5           WHEREAS, The highly respected businessman was named
 2-6     Vice-President of Corpus Christi Bank and Trust in the 1950s
 2-7     and was elected to the Robert Driscoll and Julia Driscoll and
 2-8     Robert Driscoll, Jr. Foundation Board of Directors in 1955, an
 2-9     affiliation that lasted 45 years; in 1981, he was named Chairman
2-10     of the Driscoll Foundation and Chairman of the Driscoll Children's
2-11     Hospital; tremendous accomplishments were made that benefitted
2-12     thousands of Texans; and
2-13           WHEREAS, Under his leadership, the Driscoll Children's
2-14     Hospital made great progress in fulfilling the will of
2-15     Robert and Julia Driscoll that any child be provided with
2-16     services regardless of their ability to pay; due to his
2-17     inspiration and guidance, Driscoll's teaching hospital improved
2-18     and progressed and its alumni now assure that children all over
2-19     South Texas are getting better health care; under his leadership
2-20     a new facility was constructed; in his role as Chairman of the
2-21     hospital and the foundation, Mr. Scibienski was always approachable
2-22     and accessible; and
2-23           WHEREAS, His diverse business interests also included
2-24     ownership of Las Minas Ranch, partnership in Las Minas Cattle
2-25     Company, Dolores Ranch Company, Dolores Development Company,
2-26     Prima Petroleum Company, Gulf Terminal Grain Company, United
 3-1     Savings Association, and First State Bank; and
 3-2           WHEREAS, A man of integrity, strength, and generosity,
 3-3     he gave unselfishly of his time to others and his community;
 3-4     his active involvement included the Corpus Christi Cathedral,
 3-5     Prestigious Papal Order, The Knights of the Equestrian Order
 3-6     of the Holy Sepulchre, Corpus Christi Museum, Corpus Christi
 3-7     Symphony Orchestra, Texas Hospital Association, American Red
 3-8     Cross, and Corpus Christi Chamber of Commerce; and
 3-9           WHEREAS, Recognized for his humanitarian efforts,
3-10     Mr. Scibienski was honored by the National Conference of Christians
3-11     and Jews with the "Brotherhood Award" in 1978 and by the Gulf Coast
3-12     Council Boy Scouts of America with the "Distinguished Citizen Award"
3-13     in 1991; he was elected King Alonzo XXXI in 1984 by the Buccaneer
3-14     Days Commission and was the 34th recipient of the Mr. South Texas
3-15     Award; and
3-16           WHEREAS, Few have given so freely of their time and energies
3-17     as this exceptional businessman and humanitarian; he was valued
3-18     and loved by all who knew him, and his death will be felt by all
3-19     of those who benefitted from his love, his friendship, and his
3-20     generosity; now, therefore, be it
3-21           RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas,
3-22     77th Legislature, hereby extend sincere condolences to the
3-23     family of Theodore Stephen Scibienski:  his beloved wife of
3-24     64 years, Virgie Clay Scibienski; his daughters and sons-in-law,
3-25     Helen Claire and Rod Swetman and Suzanne Marie and Murray Bass;
3-26     his son and daughter-in-law, Stephen Clay and Linda Scibienski;
 4-1     his sisters, Elizabeth Terentz, Evangeline Darago, and
 4-2     Eleanor Schultz; and his 10 grandchildren and seven
 4-3     great-grandchildren; and, be it further
 4-4           RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared
 4-5     for his family as an expression of deepest sympathy from the
 4-6     Texas Senate, and that when the Senate adjourns this day, it
 4-7     do so in memory of Theodore Stephen Scibienski.
