 1-3           WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas takes pride in
 1-4     recognizing the organizers and participants in the 42nd Annual
 1-5     League of United Latin American Citizens' Feria de las Flores on
 1-6     the occasion of their visit to the State Capitol on April 10; and
 1-7           WHEREAS, This is the 42nd year that the LULAC Council No. 1
 1-8     has sponsored the Feria de las Flores; LULAC is noted for its
 1-9     efforts to raise money for scholarships for qualified college-bound
1-10     students; through the generosity of South Texas businesses, LULAC
1-11     has given approximately $1 million in scholarships; and
1-12           WHEREAS, The Feria de las Flores is a celebration of the
1-13     heritage of Mexican American citizens and includes dance, music,
1-14     and dress typical of the different regions south of the border;
1-15     the participants compete in dance routines, costumes, poise,
1-16     personality, beauty, and on-stage questioning; and
1-17           WHEREAS, The first Feria de las Flores was created and
1-18     organized by Joe Flores in 1959, and Abby Pina was crowned
1-19     the first Feria de las Flores Queen, and Elvira Munguia was
1-20     selected Runner-up; and the next LULAC Feria de las Flores will
1-21     take place on July 21, 2001, at the Selena Auditorium, Bayfront
1-22     Plaza Convention Center in Corpus Christi, Texas; and
1-23           WHEREAS, This year the contestants are Jessica Ramirez,
1-24     Kimberly Nicole Guerra, Kayla A. Garza, Amy Guerrero,
 2-1     Martha Elena Nuncio, Melissa Nicole Diaz, Raina D. Ybarra,
 2-2     Melinda Lopez, Erin Hunter, Amanda Marie Amaro, Marlo Casarez,
 2-3     Raven Martinez, Joann de la Rosa, and Bernadette Galvan; the
 2-4     41st Annual Feria de las Flores Queen is Mariana Garza; and
 2-5           WHEREAS, The Feria de las Flores is an exemplary competition
 2-6     that provides educational opportunities for the young people
 2-7     of South Texas; NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT
 2-8           RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas,
 2-9     77th Legislature, hereby commend the League of United Latin
2-10     American Citizens Council No. 1 for its humanitarian endeavors
2-11     and extend a warm welcome to the participants and organizers
2-12     of the 42nd Annual LULAC Feria de las Flores; AND, BE IT FURTHER
2-13           RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared as an
2-14     expression of esteem from the Texas Senate to LULAC Council No. 1
2-15     and to each contestant participating in this year's Feria de las
2-16     Flores.
