 1-4                                     of
 1-5                             Charles N. Prothro
 1-6           WHEREAS, The Texas Senate wishes to honor the memory
 1-7     of Charles N. Prothro of Wichita Falls, an outstanding Texan
 1-8     whose passing on March 5, 2001, at the age of 83, brought
 1-9     great sorrow to his family and friends; and
1-10           WHEREAS, Born on January 14, 1918, this lifelong
1-11     resident of Wichita Falls graduated from Wichita Falls High
1-12     School and earned a business administration degree from
1-13     The University of Texas at Austin; during World War II, he
1-14     answered his country's call to duty and served in the
1-15     United States Coast Guard; and
1-16           WHEREAS, Before the war, Mr. Prothro joined his father-in-law
1-17     in business, establishing the Perkins-Prothro Company; through the
1-18     years his professional interests grew to include oil and gas
1-19     production, ranching, real estate, and investing, in addition to
1-20     his undertaking other ventures such as the Perkins-Timberlake
1-21     Company and the Perkins-Prothro Ranch; and
 2-1           WHEREAS, This esteemed gentleman was chairman of the board
 2-2     of the City National Bank and a director of Texas Utilities Company
 2-3     and Southwestern Life Corporation; a longtime congregant of the
 2-4     First United Methodist Church, Mr. Prothro was involved in many
 2-5     church matters as chairman of the board of trustees and the
 2-6     administrative board, and in past years he was an active member of
 2-7     the investment committee of the Methodist Children's Home in Waco;
 2-8     and
 2-9           WHEREAS, Equally generous as he was successful, Mr. Prothro
2-10     devoted much of his time and energy to the betterment of his
2-11     community; he was president of the Perkins-Prothro Foundation,
2-12     the Joe and Lois Perkins Foundation, and the Perkins Lecture
2-13     Committee, as well as the chairman and a member of the board of
2-14     directors of the Baylor University Medical Center Foundation,
2-15     and he was instrumental in the establishment of the Hospice of
2-16     Wichita Falls; and
2-17           WHEREAS, Mr. Prothro's many civic activities included a
2-18     longtime involvement in the Young Men's Christian Association,
2-19     where he served as board member and president and chaired the
2-20     building committee; he also sat on the board of Presbyterian Manor
2-21     and was president of the advisory board of the Woman's Forum; and
2-22           WHEREAS, Keenly interested in the advancement of education,
2-23     Mr. Prothro was a member of the Wichita Falls Independent School
2-24     District board for 16 years, and he was appointed to the Texas
 3-1     Commission on Higher Education and the first Coordinating Board
 3-2     of the Texas College and University System; he also served on
 3-3     The University of Texas development board and as chairman of
 3-4     the advisory council of the College of Business Administration
 3-5     Foundation; and
 3-6           WHEREAS, Truly deserving of recognition, this distinguished
 3-7     individual was duly honored as one of five outstanding young
 3-8     men in Texas by the Junior Chamber of Commerce, was one of the
 3-9     outstanding ex-students of The University of Texas College of
3-10     Business Administration, and received an honorary doctorate of
3-11     law degree from Southwestern University; and
3-12           WHEREAS, Charles N. Prothro was a successful businessman
3-13     and dedicated philanthropist, and the memory of this kind friend,
3-14     devoted husband, and loving father will undoubtedly live on in
3-15     the hearts of all those he so deeply touched; now, therefore,
3-16     be it
3-17           RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas,
3-18     77th Legislature, hereby pay tribute to the life of
3-19     Charles N. Prothro and extend sincere condolences to the members
3-20     of his family:  his wife, Elizabeth; his son, Joe Prothro and his
3-21     wife, Dale; his daughter, Kay Yeager and her husband, Frank; his
3-22     son, Mark Prothro and his wife, Dianne; the family of his late son,
3-23     Charles Vincent Prothro, and his daughter-in-law, Caren Prothro;
3-24     his grandchildren and great-grandchildren; and all his other
 4-1     relatives and many friends; and, be it further
 4-2           RESOLVED, That an official copy of this Resolution be
 4-3     prepared for the members of his family as an expression of
 4-4     deepest sympathy from the Texas Senate, and that when the Senate
 4-5     adjourns this day, it do so in memory of Charles N. Prothro.
