 1-2                          SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 724
 1-3           WHEREAS, Approximately four million Texas citizens ride
 1-4     bicycles for recreation, transportation, and fitness and spend
 1-5     more than $100 million on bicycle-related goods and services; and
 1-6           WHEREAS, Bicycle rallies and tours throughout our state
 1-7     have had a positive economic impact on many communities and helped
 1-8     raise money for charities; and
 1-9           WHEREAS, Amateur, professional, and world-champion
1-10     cyclists race and train in Texas, bringing national media
1-11     attention and recognition to our state, and Texas is home to
1-12     well-known cyclist and Plano native Lance Armstrong, who is a
1-13     two-time Olympian and who has won the prestigious Tour de France
1-14     twice; the Lance Armstrong Foundation's Ride for the Roses is held
1-15     annually in Austin and is one of the most popular and significant
1-16     events in the world of cycling; and
1-17           WHEREAS, The Texas Bicycle Coalition was organized in
1-18     1991 to promote the advancement of bicycling access, safety,
1-19     and education in the Lone Star State; and
1-20           WHEREAS, The Texas Department of Transportation has
1-21     awarded the Texas Bicycle Coalition Education Fund a grant for
1-22     the Texas SuperCyclist Project in which 3,600 physical education
 2-1     and health teachers will be trained in the state bicycle safety
 2-2     curriculum developed by the Texas Department of Public Safety; and
 2-3           WHEREAS, The members and volunteers of the Texas Bicycle
 2-4     Coalition have made valuable contributions in making our state
 2-5     safer for bicycle enthusiasts while striving to spread the
 2-6     organization's message to countless people, and it is most
 2-7     appropriate to honor them at this time; now, therefore, be it
 2-8           RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas,
 2-9     77th Legislature, hereby commend the work of the founders of
2-10     the Texas Bicycle Coalition, its board of directors, and its
2-11     volunteers and recognize April 9, 2001, as Texas Bicycle Day
2-12     at the State Capitol; and, be it further
2-13           RESOLVED, That an official copy of this Resolution be
2-14     prepared for the members of the Texas Bicycle Coalition as an
2-15     expression of best wishes from the Texas Senate.
