1-1 1 1-2 SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 738 1-3 WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas takes pleasure in 1-4 recognizing Jim Fonteno for his outstanding contributions to the 1-5 citizens of Harris County; and 1-6 WHEREAS, Currently serving his 26th year as Harris County 1-7 Commissioner for Precinct Two, Jim Fonteno was born in Port Arthur 1-8 and moved to Houston in 1946; he served in the United States Army 1-9 and the Merchant Marine during World War II and served as a 1-10 municipal court judge for the City of Baytown in 1957 and 1958; 1-11 he served as a port commissioner for the Port of Houston Authority 1-12 from 1970 to 1974; and 1-13 WHEREAS, Jim was first elected Harris County Commissioner 1-14 for Precinct Two in 1974, and since that time, he has consistently 1-15 lived by his motto "A day's work for a day's pay."; during his 1-16 tenure, Jim has maintained an active role in all aspects of the 1-17 daily operation of Precinct Two and has worked enthusiastically 1-18 to fulfill the needs of his constituents; and 1-19 WHEREAS, Commissioner Fonteno is most admired for the 1-20 exceptional programs he has developed on behalf of area citizens; 1-21 he created the East Harris County Senior Citizens Program and the 1-22 East Harris County Youth Program, both of which have been highly 2-1 successful; and 2-2 WHEREAS, In addition to these programs, he has played a 2-3 major role in establishing parks, community centers, and ball 2-4 fields and in allowing senior citizens to remain a vital force 2-5 in their community; he attends numerous fundraisers and has raised 2-6 over $4 million for various nonprofit charitable events, churches, 2-7 clubs, and organizations as a licensed auctioneer; and 2-8 WHEREAS, Jim and his wife, JoAnn, are active members of the 2-9 Holy Trinity United Methodist Church; Jim has served on nearly 2-10 every church committee and is still a member of the Methodist 2-11 Board of Missions, district level; and 2-12 WHEREAS, An exemplary gentleman and a man of many talents, 2-13 Jim Fonteno gives generously of his time and energy to help his 2-14 fellowman and his hard work and able leadership have left an 2-15 indelible imprint on the Harris County community; now, therefore, 2-16 be it 2-17 RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 2-18 77th Legislature, hereby express appreciation to Jim Fonteno for 2-19 his many accomplishments and his invaluable contributions to the 2-20 people of Harris County; and, be it further 2-21 RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for 2-22 him as an expression of high regard from the Texas Senate. 2-23 Gallegos 2-24 ______________________________________ 3-1 President of the Senate 3-2 I hereby certify that the above 3-3 Resolution was adopted by the Senate 3-4 on April 11, 2001. 3-5 ______________________________________ 3-6 Secretary of the Senate 3-7 ______________________________________ 3-8 Member, Texas Senate
