1-1 1 1-2 SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 742 1-3 WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas takes pride 1-4 in congratulating Texas A&M University-Kingsville on the grand 1-5 occasion of its 75th anniversary and on the excellent educational 1-6 opportunities it provides the young people of our state and nation; 1-7 and 1-8 WHEREAS, Texas A&M University-Kingsville opened its doors 1-9 in 1925 as South Texas State Teachers College; the emphasis was 1-10 on education and the teaching profession until 1930, when a new 1-11 alignment created the School of Agriculture and the college was 1-12 renamed the Texas College of Arts and Industries; and 1-13 WHEREAS, The School of Agriculture offered courses in dairy 1-14 husbandry, agricultural engineering, animal husbandry, poultry 1-15 husbandry, horticulture, agronomy, and farm management; the 1-16 college also began to teach courses at the Citrus and Vegetable 1-17 Training Center in Weslaco, and in 1945, the College Farm was 1-18 established on 136 acres; and 1-19 WHEREAS, Located in the heart of Kingsville and not far 1-20 from the legendary King Ranch, the university continued to expand 1-21 significantly over the years; graduate school degrees were first 1-22 authorized in 1935; in 1940, a master's degree in business was 2-1 offered, and in 1941, a master of science degree in agriculture 2-2 was made available; over the next several decades, innumerable 2-3 advances were made in the university's colleges; and 2-4 WHEREAS, In 1989, a bill was filed by Senator Carlos Truan 2-5 and Senator Judith Zaffirini to unite the University of South Texas 2-6 System with the Texas A&M University System; the University of 2-7 South Texas System included Corpus Christi State University, 2-8 Texas A&I University, and Laredo State University; the bill 2-9 became a law and the merger a reality on May 17, 1989; and 2-10 WHEREAS, Today Texas A&M University-Kingsville offers 56 2-11 bachelor's degrees in 52 fields of study and 60 graduate degrees 2-12 in 38 areas through the colleges of Agriculture and Human 2-13 Sciences, Arts and Sciences, Business Administration, Education, 2-14 and Engineering; and 2-15 WHEREAS, The university has become the premier research 2-16 institute of higher education in South Texas and ranks 11th in 2-17 the State of Texas in sponsored research; it focuses on providing 2-18 an intellectually challenging education and maintaining high 2-19 standards of academic performance; and 2-20 WHEREAS, The dedication and the vision of the trustees and 2-21 administration of Texas A&M University-Kingsville have enabled 2-22 thousands of students to receive high-quality instruction and 2-23 guidance; and 3-1 WHEREAS, It is the goal of Texas A&M University-Kingsville 3-2 to thoroughly prepare its students for thriving in a highly 3-3 competitive and complex world; now, therefore, be it 3-4 RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 3-5 77th Legislature, hereby express appreciation to Texas A&M 3-6 University-Kingsville for providing an outstanding educational 3-7 environment and for its innumerable contributions to the 3-8 State of Texas; and, be it further 3-9 RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for the 3-10 university as an expression of high regard from the Texas Senate. 3-11 Truan 3-12 Armbrister Gallegos Ogden 3-13 Barrientos Harris Shapiro 3-14 Bernsen Haywood Shapleigh 3-15 Bivins Jackson Sibley 3-16 Brown Lindsay Staples 3-17 Cain Lucio Van de Putte 3-18 Carona Madla Wentworth 3-19 Duncan Moncrief West 3-20 Ellis Nelson Whitmire 3-21 Fraser Zaffirini 3-22 Ratliff, President of the Senate 3-23 ______________________________________ 3-24 President of the Senate 3-25 I hereby certify that the above 3-26 Resolution was adopted by the Senate 3-27 on April 17, 2001. 3-28 ______________________________________ 3-29 Secretary of the Senate 3-30 ______________________________________ 3-31 Dean of the Senate
