1-1 1 1-2 SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 749 1-3 In Memory 1-4 of 1-5 Charley V. Wootan 1-6 WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas joins the citizens 1-7 of College Station in mourning the loss of Charley V. Wootan, who 1-8 died April 7, 2001, at the age of 74; and 1-9 WHEREAS, Born October 9, 1926, in Junction, Texas, 1-10 Charley Wootan served in the United States Marines from 1944 1-11 to 1946 and was a member of the United States Air Force Reserve; 1-12 he graduated from Texas A&M University in 1950 and earned his 1-13 doctorate degree from the university in agricultural economics 1-14 in 1965; and 1-15 WHEREAS, Mr. Wootan was dedicated to his work as director 1-16 of the Texas Transportation Institute, where he served with 1-17 distinction from 1976 until his retirement in 1993; and 1-18 WHEREAS, Recognized as a giant in the field of 1-19 transportation, Charley Wootan was widely respected for his 1-20 leadership and for making advancements and safety improvements 1-21 that affected the lives of countless Americans in a positive 2-1 manner; and 2-2 WHEREAS, Accolades for his outstanding work in his 2-3 profession include the George S. Bartlett award from the 2-4 Transportation Research Board, the American Association of 2-5 Highways and Transportation, and the American Road and 2-6 Transportation Builders Association; he was the recipient of 2-7 the International Right of Way Association's Y. T. Lum Award, 2-8 and he earned the Luther DeBerry Award in 2000 for his 2-9 contributions in transportation to the State of Texas; and 2-10 WHEREAS, An exemplary and distinguished gentleman, 2-11 Mr. Wootan was respected for his leadership and his many 2-12 accomplishments; he was a member of the College Station Lions 2-13 Club and was chairman of the College Station United Fund Drive 2-14 in 1978 and of the College Station Planning and Zoning Commission 2-15 in 1968 and 1969; and 2-16 WHEREAS, A man of integrity, strength, and generosity, he 2-17 gave unselfishly of his time to others, and his wisdom, warmth, 2-18 and valued counsel will not be forgotten by those who knew him; 2-19 and 2-20 WHEREAS, A devout Christian, Charley was a member of 2-21 Saint Thomas Episcopal Church; and 2-22 WHEREAS, Charley Wootan was a devoted husband, father, and 2-23 grandfather, and he leaves behind memories that will be treasured 3-1 forever by his family and many friends; now, therefore, be it 3-2 RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 3-3 77th Legislature, hereby extend sincere condolences to the 3-4 bereaved family of Charley V. Wootan: his wife, Doxie Wootan; his 3-5 son and daughter-in-law, Dr. Richard C. Wootan and Jean Wootan; his 3-6 daughter and son-in-law, Debra A. Roberson and Gary T. Roberson; 3-7 his sisters, Alberta Nelson, Mozelle Benton, and Yvonne Parker; and 3-8 his five grandchildren; and, be it further 3-9 RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for the 3-10 members of his family as an expression of deepest sympathy from the 3-11 Texas Senate, and that when the Senate adjourns this day, it do so 3-12 in memory of Charley V.
