 1-5                                 Anita Bass
 1-6           WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas joins the
 1-7     citizens of Lubbock in mourning the loss of a beloved civic
 1-8     leader, Anita Bass, who died February 27, 2001; and
 1-9           WHEREAS, Born May 3, 1919, Anita was a native of
1-10     Briscoe County; she graduated from Tulia High School and
1-11     attended Tulane University before ultimately graduating from
1-12     Draughon's Business College; and
1-13           WHEREAS, Anita became a resident of Lubbock in 1937, and
1-14     on March 28, 1942, she married Roy Bass in Memphis, Tennessee;
1-15     Roy later became a two-term Lubbock mayor; and
1-16           WHEREAS, Friends and family remember Anita for her
1-17     unflagging support of so many different civic causes; her
1-18     passion for community leadership was equal to that of her
1-19     husband's, and together they accomplished great things for
1-20     the City of Lubbock; and
 2-1           WHEREAS, The South Plains Food Bank, the Lubbock
 2-2     Chamber of Commerce, the American Cancer Society, the Lubbock
 2-3     Arts Festival, and Lubbock Cultural Affairs Council are but a
 2-4     few of the organizations that Anita devoted her time and talents
 2-5     to; she had vast resources of energy and strength that enabled
 2-6     her to serve the community that she so loved; and
 2-7           WHEREAS, Anita Bass will also be remembered for her
 2-8     progressive spirit; she and her family worked to promote diversity
 2-9     in employment and to reduce racial discrimination in the Lubbock
2-10     community; and
2-11           WHEREAS, A woman of unfailing integrity, admirable strength,
2-12     and supreme generosity, Anita spent her life giving unselfishly
2-13     of her time to others, and her wisdom, warmth, and valued counsel
2-14     will not be forgotten; and
2-15           WHEREAS, This exemplary and distinguished lady leaves a
2-16     legacy of steadfast commitment to her family, her friends, and
2-17     her community, and the State of Texas is truly fortunate to have
2-18     counted her as one of its citizens; now, therefore, be it
2-19           RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas,
2-20     77th Legislature, hereby extend deepest sympathy to the family
2-21     of Anita Bass:  her sons, Roy Byrn Bass, Jr., David Dewey Bass,
2-22     and Mark Ivan Bass; her sisters, Opal Keith and Betty Price;
2-23     and her five grandchildren; and, be it further
2-24           RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for her
 3-1     family as an expression of deepest sympathy from the Texas Senate,
 3-2     and that when the Senate adjourns this day, it do so in memory of
 3-3     Anita Bass.
