1-1 1 1-2 SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 756 1-3 In Memory 1-4 of 1-5 Nell Myers 1-6 WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas joins the 1-7 citizens of Austin and Texans across the state in mourning 1-8 the loss of Nell Myers, who died September 26, 2000, at the 1-9 age of 75; and 1-10 WHEREAS, A well-known leading Texas citizen, Nell Myers 1-11 was a champion for victims' rights and was the founder of People 1-12 Against Violent Crime, the organization she established following 1-13 the 1979 murder of her daughter, Cydney Myers; and 1-14 WHEREAS, After the tragic loss of Cydney, Nell Myers turned 1-15 her grief and anger into a life of dedication and support to crime 1-16 victims across the state; and 1-17 WHEREAS, Through People Against Violent Crime, she assisted 1-18 victims and their families by informing them of their rights and 1-19 attending trials and courtroom procedures; she worked with 1-20 legislative, executive, and judicial branches of the government, 1-21 as well as other organizations to find solutions to violent crime; 2-1 along with the help of Travis County District Attorney Ronnie Earle, 2-2 she drafted what became the 1985 Crime Victims' Bill of Rights; and 2-3 WHEREAS, The Crime Victims' Bill of Rights allows victims of 2-4 violent crime and their relatives to give impact statements before 2-5 judges and the Board of Pardons and Paroles about the devastating 2-6 effects of crimes; it also requires that victims be notified of 2-7 parole proceedings for their offenders; and 2-8 WHEREAS, Nell played a major role in ensuring the 2-9 ratification of a state constitutional amendment that secured 2-10 a fund in the State Treasury for the sole use of victims of 2-11 violent crime; and 2-12 WHEREAS, An exemplary and distinguished lady, Nell Myers 2-13 was highly respected for her many accomplishments, her leadership, 2-14 and her tireless efforts on behalf of crime victims; she was 2-15 honored for her work by President Bill Clinton at a White House 2-16 reception in 1994; and 2-17 WHEREAS, A woman of integrity, strength, compassion, and 2-18 generosity, she gave unselfishly of her time to others, and her 2-19 wisdom, warmth, and valued counsel will not be forgotten by those 2-20 who knew her; and 2-21 WHEREAS, Nell Myers was devoted to her late husband, 2-22 Fred Myers, and to her daughters, and she leaves behind memories 2-23 that will be treasured forever by her family and many friends; now, 3-1 therefore, be it 3-2 RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 3-3 77th Legislature, hereby extend sincere condolences to the 3-4 bereaved family of Nell Myers: her daughter, Whitney Myers; 3-5 her sisters and brothers; and her nieces and nephews; and, be 3-6 it further 3-7 RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for the 3-8 members of her family as an expression of deepest sympathy from 3-9 the Texas Senate, and that when the Senate adjourns this day, it 3-10 do so in memory of Nell Myers. 3-11 Barrientos 3-12 ______________________________________ 3-13 President of the Senate 3-14 I hereby certify that the above 3-15 Resolution was adopted by the Senate 3-16 on April 18, 2001, by a rising vote. 3-17 ______________________________________ 3-18 Secretary of the Senate 3-19 ______________________________________ 3-20 Member, Texas Senate
