 1-2                          SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 773
 1-3           WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas proudly recognizes
 1-4     the City of Odessa on the grand occasion of this year's 112th State
 1-5     Arbor Day Celebration; and
 1-6           WHEREAS, Due to the efforts of Keep Odessa Beautiful and the
 1-7     City of Odessa Parks and Recreation Department, the City of Odessa
 1-8     was selected from 22 Texas cities by the Texas Forest Service to
 1-9     be the host city for this year's State Arbor Day celebration; the
1-10     celebration will be held on Friday, April 27, 2001, at the new
1-11     Memorial Gardens Park; and
1-12           WHEREAS, The sponsors have planned a number of events to
1-13     be part of the celebration, including an Arbor Day National
1-14     Poster Contest for fifth grade students and tree planting and
1-15     environmental education activities; and
1-16           WHEREAS, While Arbor Day is a long-held tradition, the event
1-17     has taken on new significance in our age of environmental concern;
1-18     trees mean energy-conserving shade for our cities, protection from
1-19     erosion by wind and water, green leaves to restore oxygen to the
1-20     air, renewable resources for the forests, filters for pollution,
1-21     and relief from increasingly urban landscapes; and
1-22           WHEREAS, Trees and forests also provide natural beauty,
1-23     watershed protection, wildlife habitats, and opportunities for
 2-1     outdoor recreation; and
 2-2           WHEREAS, America is awakening to the need for more trees in
 2-3     both rural and urban areas, and the City of Odessa has worked
 2-4     hard to be a source of information and support for tree planting
 2-5     efforts in our state; the City of Odessa Parks and Recreation
 2-6     Department is celebrating the city's sixth year of recognition as
 2-7     "Tree City USA"; and
 2-8           WHEREAS, The Arbor Day celebration that is being hosted by
 2-9     Odessa is an affirmation of the city's active concern for our
2-10     country and for the welfare and future of the State of Texas; now,
2-11     therefore, be it
2-12           RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas,
2-13     77th Legislature, hereby express appreciation to the City of Odessa
2-14     for its leadership and exemplary participation in State Arbor Day
2-15     and extend best wishes to the citizens of Odessa for an enjoyable
2-16     celebration; and, be it further
2-17           RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for
2-18     the City of Odessa as an expression of high regard from the
2-19     Texas Senate.
