 1-2                          SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 777
 1-3           WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas is pleased to
 1-4     recognize Tom Chandler on his many accomplishments and his
 1-5     exceptional career; and
 1-6           WHEREAS, Born in Greenville, Texas, Tom Chandler served
 1-7     his country in the United States Marine Corps after graduating
 1-8     from Adamson High School; he attended Baylor University, where
 1-9     he was an outstanding baseball player and served as both a
1-10     captain and catcher on the team; and
1-11           WHEREAS, Tom joined the Pittsburgh Pirates as a
1-12     professional player and then became a baseball coach at his
1-13     former high school; he coached the Alpine Cowboys in
1-14     semi-professional baseball and helped to develop such major
1-15     league stars as Joe Horlen, Norm Cash, and Gaylord Perry; in
1-16     1958, he joined the staff of Texas A&M University as an
1-17     assistant coach; one year later, he became the team's head
1-18     coach and led the Aggies to the Southwest Conference
1-19     championship; and
1-20           WHEREAS, Tom Chandler carved a truly remarkable career as
1-21     the Aggies' baseball coach, leading them to five Southwest
1-22     Conference championships and a 660-329-10 record; excelling on
 2-1     a national level, his teams advanced to the National Collegiate
 2-2     Athletic Association playoffs seven times and reached the College
 2-3     World Series in 1964; and
 2-4           WHEREAS, Tom Chandler earned the distinction of being the
 2-5     all-time winningest coach at Texas A&M University and received
 2-6     numerous accolades for his exceptional accomplishments; he was
 2-7     inducted into the Texas A&M Hall of Fame and the American
 2-8     Association of Baseball Coaches National Hall of Fame; and
 2-9           WHEREAS, Under his leadership, more than 75 percent of his
2-10     lettermen graduated, and he helped in the development of numerous
2-11     talented players who signed professional contracts; he also served
2-12     as the United States of America national baseball coach in the
2-13     summer of 1978; after retiring from Texas A&M University in 1984,
2-14     Mr. Chandler worked as a scout for the Cleveland Indians for 10
2-15     years and managed the organization's club in Batavia, New York; and
2-16           WHEREAS, An exemplary citizen who has distinguished himself
2-17     in his personal and professional life, Tom Chandler is beloved and
2-18     respected by his family, friends, and colleagues, and he deserves
2-19     recognition for his many accomplishments; now, therefore, be it
2-20           RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas,
2-21     77th Legislature, hereby commend Tom Chandler on his exceptional
2-22     achievements and extend to him best wishes for the future; and,
2-23     be it further
2-24           RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for
 3-1     Tom Chandler as an expression of esteem from the Texas Senate.
