 1-5                          Madge Anna Stewart Keeton
 1-6           WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas joins the
 1-7     citizens of Austin in mourning the death of a beloved citizen,
 1-8     Madge Anna Stewart Keeton, who died April 3, 2001; and
 1-9           WHEREAS, Well known in the Austin community as the spirited
1-10     matriarch of the Keeton clan, Madge was the wife of Page Keeton,
1-11     the 25-year dean of The University of Texas School of Law, and the
1-12     mother and grandmother of several prominent public servants; and
1-13           WHEREAS, Born May 29, 1911, in San Antonio, Madge was raised
1-14     in Atlanta, Georgia, by Norris and Mary Catherine Stewart and
1-15     moved to Austin in 1931 to attend The University of Texas; and
1-16           WHEREAS, Madge's performance at The University of Texas was
1-17     indeed distinguished; not only did she earn a bachelor of arts
1-18     with honors in English and the title of Bluebonnet Belle, she
1-19     captured the affection of the young law professor, W. Page Keeton,
1-20     her husband of 64 years; and
 2-1           WHEREAS, Madge steadfastly supported Page throughout his
 2-2     distinguished tenure with The University of Texas School of Law,
 2-3     ably assisting him as he made it one of the nation's most
 2-4     prestigious institutions for legal studies; and
 2-5           WHEREAS, The City of Austin Brackenridge Hospital Women's
 2-6     Auxiliary, the Law Wives, the Parent-Teacher Association, and
 2-7     the Panhellenic Council were but a few of the many local
 2-8     organizations Madge dedicated her time and talent to; and
 2-9           WHEREAS, Her generous, fun-loving character won Madge the
2-10     affection of many, and her wisdom, warmth, and valued counsel
2-11     will not be forgotten by those who knew her; she leaves her
2-12     family, friends, and fellow citizens of Austin many treasured
2-13     memories and a legacy of commitment to her community and her
2-14     family; now, therefore, be it
2-15           RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas,
2-16     77th Legislature, hereby send condolences to the family of
2-17     Madge Anna Stewart Keeton:  her twin sister, Mara Stewart Landry;
2-18     her son and daughter-in-law, Richard Page Keeton and wife,
2-19     Susan Keeton; her daughter, Carole Keeton Rylander; her
2-20     grandchildren, Dr. Mark Barr McClellan, Dudley Page McClellan,
2-21     Bradley Dean McClellan, Scott Keeton McClellan, Laura Keeton McVey,
2-22     Emily Katherine Keeton, and John Page Keeton; and her four
2-23     beautiful great-granddaughters; and, be it further
2-24           RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared
 3-1     for her family as an expression of deepest sympathy from the
 3-2     Texas Senate, and that when the Senate adjourns this day, it
 3-3     do so in memory of Madge Anna Stewart Keeton.
