1-1 SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 797 1-2 WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas is pleased to 1-3 recognize the 22 secondary and postsecondary mathematics teachers 1-4 who are the first men and women to complete a unique course offered 1-5 by the Aerospace Academy for Engineering and Teacher Education; and 1-6 WHEREAS, These teachers are from nine different independent 1-7 school districts and community colleges from across Texas; they 1-8 have participated in a course spanning two semesters that focused 1-9 on making real-world connections between the mathematics concepts 1-10 they teach and space programs; and 1-11 WHEREAS, The teachers spent part of their course time in 1-12 the aerospace work environment interacting with aerospace 1-13 professionals to investigate the use of transcendental functions 1-14 to model phenomena occurring in the aerospace industry; they then 1-15 study how technology can be used to enhance mathematics teaching; and 1-16 WHEREAS, By offering this course, the Aerospace Academy is 1-17 demonstrating what can be accomplished when education, industry, 1-18 and government work together to address a problem; the course is 1-19 designed to help eradicate the shortages of engineering and 1-20 computer science practitioners and mathematics and science teachers; 1-21 and 1-22 WHEREAS, The academy is a partnership of two independent 1-23 school districts, two community colleges, three universities, 1-24 NASA-JSC, and the Clear Lake area business community; teachers 2-1 will carry the knowledge they gain from the academy's course into 2-2 their classrooms to inspire their students to take an interest in 2-3 mathematics-intensive careers, such as engineering; now, therefore, 2-4 be it 2-5 RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 2-6 77th Legislature, hereby commend these 22 teachers, the 2-7 superintendents, principals, and presidents who support their 2-8 efforts, and their three San Jacinto College district professors, 2-9 Sharon Sledge, Dr. Sarah Janes, and Dr. Terry Wilson, and extend 2-10 to them best wishes on the occasion of Space Day 2001; and, be it 2-11 further 2-12 RESOLVED, That copies of this Resolution be prepared for them 2-13 as an expression of esteem from the Texas Senate. 2-14 Jackson 2-15 Brown 2-16 Armbrister Gallegos Shapleigh 2-17 Barrientos Harris Sibley 2-18 Bernsen Haywood Staples 2-19 Bivins Lindsay Truan 2-20 Cain Lucio Van de Putte 2-21 Carona Madla Wentworth 2-22 Duncan Moncrief West 2-23 Ellis Nelson Whitmire 2-24 Fraser Ogden Zaffirini 2-25 Shapiro 2-26 Ratliff, President of the Senate 2-27 ______________________________________ 2-28 President of the Senate 2-29 I hereby certify that the above 2-30 Resolution was adopted by the Senate 2-31 on April 24, 2001. 2-32 ______________________________________ 2-33 Secretary of the Senate 2-34 ______________________________________ 2-35 Member, Texas Senate 2 3-1 ______________________________________ 3-2 Member, Texas Senate 3
