 1-4                                     of
 1-5                                Butch Hoffer
 1-6           WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas joins the citizens
 1-7     of Beaumont in mourning the death of beloved local businessman,
 1-8     Butch Hoffer, who died at age 89; and
 1-9           WHEREAS, The son of poor immigrants, Butch began his career
1-10     in retail as a boy, helping his parents run their fruit stand
1-11     in downtown Beaumont; and
1-12           WHEREAS, As a young man Butch joined with his brother to
1-13     open an Army surplus store; the venture proved successful, and
1-14     the brothers soon moved on to athletic apparel with the opening
1-15     of Hoffer's Sports Wear in 1938; and
1-16           WHEREAS, Hoffer's Sports Wear has since become one of
1-17     Beaumont's preeminent clothing stores; over the years, Butch's
1-18     store attracted not only local business, but also the regular
1-19     patronage of such noted professional athletes as Saint Louis
1-20     Cardinals pitcher Dizzy Dean and Detroit Tigers Schoolboy Roe
1-21     and Hank Greenberg; and
1-22           WHEREAS, His business enabled Butch to interact with
 2-1     citizens of Beaumont, and he was widely respected and loved
 2-2     for his affable, fun-loving  nature; and
 2-3           WHEREAS, Upon retiring from work in the 1980s, Butch gave
 2-4     back to the Beaumont community, generously donating his time,
 2-5     resources, and talent to the Melton Young Men's Christian
 2-6     Association, Some Other Place Mission, the Salvation Army,
 2-7     the American Red Cross, and the Rotary Club; and
 2-8           WHEREAS, His family and friends will remember Butch for his
 2-9     energy, intelligence, and warmth; he leaves behind many memories
2-10     that will be treasured forever by those in the Beaumont community;
2-11     now, therefore, be it
2-12           RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas,
2-13     77th Legislature, hereby extend sincere condolences to
2-14     the family of Butch Hoffer:  his wife, Anna "2-2" Hoffer; his
2-15     children, Lewis, Barbara, and Sharon; and his five grandchildren;
2-16     and, be it further
2-17           RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for his
2-18     family as an expression of deepest sympathy from the Texas Senate,
2-19     and that when the Senate adjourns this day, it do so in memory of
2-20     Butch Hoffer.
