 1-2                          SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 839
 1-3           WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas takes great pride
 1-4     in recognizing the Montrose Clinic of Houston on the grand occasion
 1-5     of its 20th anniversary celebration; and
 1-6           WHEREAS, In the 1980s, an increase in sexually transmitted
 1-7     diseases and the outbreak of HIV/AIDS in the Houston community
 1-8     warranted public health action; and
 1-9           WHEREAS, Beginning in 1981, the Montrose Clinic opened as
1-10     a screening and treatment center for sexually transmitted diseases,
1-11     and in 1985, it became Houston's first alternative HIV antibody
1-12     testing site; and
1-13           WHEREAS, In addition to its standard services, the Montrose
1-14     Clinic organized the Houston Clinical Research Network in 1989 to
1-15     improve HIV/AIDS patient care; over the years, the successful
1-16     program has participated in over 80 research studies, bringing
1-17     potentially life-saving drugs to over 1,000 Houston area
1-18     residents; and
1-19           WHEREAS, Today, Montrose Clinic serves more than 14,000
1-20     men, women, and teenagers annually with over 20,000 patient/client
1-21     visits for HIV testing and counseling, STD screening and treatment,
1-22     primary HIV health care, early intervention, education, medical
 2-1     case management, outreach, and other services addressing specific
 2-2     needs; and
 2-3           WHEREAS, For the past 20 years, Montrose Clinic has
 2-4     administered vital health care services in the Houston community,
 2-5     providing thousands of Texans access to affordable, life-saving
 2-6     services and information; such an estimable institution is truly
 2-7     deserving of high praise; now, therefore, be it
 2-8           RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas,
 2-9     77th Legislature, hereby recognize Montrose Clinic of Houston on
2-10     its 20th anniversary and honor the clinic's staff and volunteers
2-11     for their valuable contributions to preserving the health of
2-12     citizens of this state; and, be it further
2-13           RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for
2-14     this esteemed organization as an expression of high regard from
2-15     the Texas Senate.
