 1-2                          SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 843
 1-3           WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas takes great
 1-4     pleasure in joining The Episcopal Seminary of the Southwest in
 1-5     recognizing the Reverend William C. Spong, who is retiring after
 1-6     serving with distinction for 29 years as a member of the faculty
 1-7     in the fields of pastoral theology and clinical pastoral education;
 1-8     and
 1-9           WHEREAS, Reverend Spong's outstanding academic background
1-10     reflects his extensive preparation for the work he does; after
1-11     receiving degrees from the University of North Carolina and
1-12     Duke University, he earned a doctor of divinity degree at The
1-13     Episcopal Seminary of the Southwest; and
1-14           WHEREAS, Founder of The Pastoral Education and Family
1-15     Counseling Center, Reverend Spong became a prophetic voice for
1-16     those seeking guidance, enlightenment, hope, and support; through
1-17     his use of theater, music, and literature, he opened the doors of
1-18     understanding for those who sought spiritual answers; and
1-19           WHEREAS, Recognized for his great leadership capabilities,
1-20     the highly respected theologian is often called upon to share his
1-21     gift of instructing others with congregations throughout Austin;
1-22     his ability to teach profound and deep truths in a simple and
 2-1     understanding manner is a virtue for which he is widely acclaimed;
 2-2     and
 2-3           WHEREAS, Spiritual and dedicated to helping others,
 2-4     Reverend Spong has had a positive influence on the lives of
 2-5     many Christians and has earned the love and respect of all with
 2-6     whom he has shared his faith and knowledge; now, therefore, be it
 2-7           RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas,
 2-8     77th Legislature, hereby join the citizens of Austin in commending
 2-9     the Reverend William C. Spong for his dedicated service on behalf
2-10     of his fellowman and extend all best wishes for the future; and, be
2-11     it further
2-12           RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for
2-13     Reverend Spong as an expression of esteem and high regard from the
2-14     Texas Senate.
